So was Hurney the one that decided to cut Cam?

if by team you mean wide receivers and HB, you are correct

the rest of the team though...it’s statistically just isn’t true

but whether he played better here or not isn’t the main point - it’s neither here nor there because they way Cam is playing overall is not worth an extension and having cap tied up in him at his age and injury history, he isn’t the same, and especially with a new coach, GM, and system in place.

an extension would have been a horrible move for this franchise, drafting our new, next franchise QB was always meant to be so we can compete for years to come on a rookie deal...time to let go and embrace that.

a one year extension would've been easier to deal with than bridgewater. or even two years front loaded and incentive laden. frankly it was a decision between two quarterbacks and while cam isn't a long term solution by any stretch, marty, if indeed he was calling the shots here, definitely picked the wrong one.

I know people have said Brady insisted on Bridgewater and wouldn’t join the Panthers if we didn’t get him. I always found that bull.
Before the season Hurney seemed very confident we could make the playoffs with this team.
As much as people think Rhule had a ton of control I think he didn’t have as much as people thought.
Brown was a Hurney pick. Bridgewater felt like a Hurney signing, the bloated contract definitely was vintage Hurney. CMC mega contract was a mistake, Shaqs contract as well.
Hurney is old fashioned. Which I always interpreted as: Hurney builds the team with some input from he coach but Hurney has the final say and the coach tries to work with what Hurney gives him. Which for 3 years hasn’t worked at all and resulted in worsening records.

Samir Suleiman's official title is "Direct of Player Negotiations and Salary Cap Manager".  I don't think Hurney has handled any contracts this year.

the 2020 Panthers would be a playoff team with Cam Newton at QB

haters will say it’s a lie

This shell of Cam in 2020 wouldn't take Alabama to a break even record. Sorry, he isn't even mediocre anymore. His lack of honing his skills and insisting of taking on defensive players shortened his career. And no defense of our front office who never gave him more than a pedestrian offensive line and mainly NFL cast offs or past prime players for skill positions out side of Smitty. The past is past and frankly Cam needs to retire because no one wants to remember him like this.

Well thank god Hurney drafted Chinn, Brown and YGM for us. That was a great parting gift.

I agree, that would have been preferable, that’s why my first post said it would have been nice to play him out his last year and save the $.  Who is to say Cam would’ve been on board with that, a contract like TBs though? We aren’t privy to know and judging by Cam’s ‘all I want is some commitment’ comment regarding his contract, it’s difficult to say he’d sign a contract reflecting exactly the opposite of that.

But it doesn’t matter because we did find a QB willing to sign a contract like that and he has one more year left, and gave us a higher pick than Cam would’ve for the future, if you believe Cam would’ve done better here.

I still say the best scenario would’ve been to just let Cam play this year then move on.

I'm still of the belief that the person most responsible for letting Newton go is David Tepper.

With regard to Marty though, Roaring Riot did indeed confirm that he most wanted Bridgewater. Hurney apparently believed Bridgewater could help the team be competitive this year (thus, saving his job).

We also know from Tepper that Marty went into "recruiting mode" while they were interviewing Matt Rhule. I'm guessing Marty believed that he and Rhule could work well together, but now we've learned that a lack of alignment between them is one of the primary reasons Marty's gone.

I guess you could say two moves that Marty probably thought were in his favor ended up getting him fired.

in spite of his occasional stinkers i'd say cam had a better year than teddy on a MUCH worse team. if the patriots had our wide receiver corps they'd be in the playoffs.

Agreed. Cam had some really bad games, and obviously not the beset season but I don't think he was as bad this season as people are making it to be.

The other thing to take into consideration here is that I don't doubt MH knew this was his last year here. If he goes to the WFT that further proves that there was a plan all along. MH was in a lame duck year, and DT just gave him time to find his next gig. These people are professionals with many years of experience, and know that there is normally always another job for them in the league. I have a hard time thinking any of this is a surprise for anyone.

Working in the NFL is very much like working in a big corp. This is all part of the process. Unless you are just blatantly bad at your job like Matt Millen or  Joe Douglas

Anybody who thinks we should have kept Cam this year....how far do you think he would have taken us?  Like 7-9 or something at best, if we're being charitable?  Seems to contradict the Huddle mantra of "tank tank tank".

I think Cam provides a boost that nets at least some of the wins that Teddy and the offense couldn't close, and also not requiring final-possession heroics in each case. I'd put absolute best case at 10-6 but the potential to surprise some folks in the playoffs if Cam got hot along with this defensive improvement.

With respect to the thread topic if it was indeed Marty as the primary behind the move to Teddy then that was a terrible decision. It was perhaps time to cut Cam and that can be argued but his plan for succession was poor.

    • If he sucks again and the stands are empty by week 5 they pull him. He will ride the pine. Tepper will not be embarrassed again. Tepper will be on the sideline with a headset calling plays by week 6. Dan will be running water to players and bringing them towels by week 8 if we suck again. Coach C will be so rattled he won't come out of the locker room.
