Would you trade our first rounder for Deshaun?

So this is exactly what the Panthers need to do? Get rid of draft picks and inherit his contract which would leave the team cash strapped with no way to build around him?

Talent alone?  Yes.  Trade is a steal.  But what is the actual cost?

Atlanta's Ryan and Jones have that team in Cap hell.  Philly and Wentz are another example.   At least with a rookie you have 5 years to see if he is a good fit and worth market value--but to buy a team out of a burdensome contract without knowing the fit, is a risk.  A rookie contract, after you cut TB next season and include one year of his salary, would cost the Panthers about $50m over the next 4 years.  Signing Watson at his current contract would cost the Panthers about $130m AND multiple picks.

The difference is about $20m.  We could draft and sign a first-round rookie and re-sign Moton with the savings alone.  I am not for it, based on the cost to get him here and to pay him once he gets here.   He was not worth 20% of the salary cap in Houston (winning 4), so why try it here?

Texans beat writer John McClain...

Quote

Under no circumstances will the Texans trade Watson, who’s coming off an extraordinary season for a 4-12 team.

Pro Football Talk raised the possibility Thursday of Watson asking to be traded, and even if he does ask, he’s not going anywhere.

The Texans aren’t foolish enough to trade one of the NFL’s best quarterbacks who’s playing under a $156 million contract through the 2025 season.

Watson hasn’t met new general manager Nick Caserio. He doesn’t know who his next head coach will be.

In his last Zoom call after the season, Watson unloaded on the team, saying the Texans needed a strong head coach who could change the culture and lead the players.

Ignore the rumors, the Texans will not trade Deshaun Watson
