ARTICLE: Panthers want to make a run at Deshaun Watson...clearing cap space to do so

The Panthers have cut several players this month, creating some cap space that they’d love to spend on Deshaun Watson.

Carolina’s moves in the last week have cleared nearly $20 million in cap space, which would be enough to absorb Watson’s 2021 cap hit, and the Panthers plan to make a run at Watson if the Texans make him available in a trade, David Newton of ESPN reports. (That is an actual report, although ESPN has given it less attention than the “bold prediction” that the Panthers’ offer would be Christian McCaffrey and three first-round draft picks.)

The phrasing of the report — the Panthers will make a run at Watson if the Texans make him available — is almost identical to a previous report that the Broncos will make an offer for Watson if the Texans make him available. That suggests that multiple teams are waiting around for the Texans to say Watson is on the trading block, and then they’ll pull the trigger on a big offer when and if the Texans give them the go-ahead.

But if you want Watson and think you can make a credible offer for him, why wait? Why not call the Texans now and let them know you’re willing to part with a significant number of draft picks and/or players to get Watson? The worst the Texans can tell you is no. In a best-case scenario, it may begin the process of your team acquiring one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL.

Watson wants to be traded, and the Texans are saying publicly that they won’t trade him. But there’s likely some trade package good enough that the Texans would make the move. Teams like the Broncos and Panthers appear ready to make those offers.

Didnt y’all say yesterday the Broncos were out?

Yes Verge did. I think we will be a major player in the Watson sweepstakes if he becomes available. Tepper seems set on getting who he wants in order to change our franchise around and give the fans some hope. We all know we are going nowhere with Teddy and we desperately need a franchise QB

I hope Tepper doesn't turn into another meddling owner.

Does the new GM and Rhule really want to tie up their entire future into 1 player? It doesn't seem like a risk they would want to take.

Coaches and GMs have no chance without a top QB.

You can’t win without one and you don’t keep your job if you don’t win.

Not much of a rebuild if you trade away all your Draft capital for the next three years.

Your rebuild gets a snort of coke with someone like Watson. No first round draft pick will ever have the impact of a true top franchise QB. Greenbay will always compete with Rodgers. No draft pick like Shaq, Brown, Moore, even CMC will ever allow you to compete unless you have a QB that can change the game. Only then do the puzzle pieces fit in, and Rhule has shown the ability to coach up players into the system. You can’t coach up a franchise QB, but you can the pieces around him.

    • Ehh, new front office has 2 drafts under their belt -- Salaun draft class was really a horrible class in general, but Salaun has started to show some of his potential and KJ Simpson not bad for a 2nd round pick. This past draft clearly looks like it was knocked out of the fuging park obviously with Kon but also Sion and Kalk already contributing in somewhat big roles for late round picks. And McNeeley has shown potential and lit it up in summer league, seems to be doing well in the G league for a young guy too.      As for this season I think a very realistic goal and outcome of the regular season is sneaking up into a 7 or 8 seed and then winning 1 of 2 play-in games to make the real playoffs. Probably get cooked in round 1 but that playoff experience and establishing that expectation of winning is critical to the development of our young core.
    • Sound write-up MHS, as always.  Agree that the smart move that forward thinking franchises make would be drafting a tackle early, if not for sure in R1, depending on who's there. Based on early predictions we're choosing between Fano and Proctor. No brainer here...Fano all day. Proctor does not move the needle for me. In my mind, Icky has less future here than Brooks does. I love Icky, but he has been average as a top-10 pick, one good year where you saw the potential...and that was this year. He's built like a RT and his strengths are there, but he's always played left. I also feel like part of what has held him back from being elite, was his work ethic. He was known for it coming out, but feel like he fell right at home in Carolina and maybe didn't push himself as hard as he needed to. Throw in a major crucial injury that will take time to recover and a historical low return rate to current form, and the outlook is not great. Fano can play both sides and we need to also plan for Moton's departure. Either way, delaying drafting a tackle early this year will hurt us down the line. Our current OL is overpriced and needs to start adding draftees to start balancing out the inevitable changes coming in the next 2-3 years.  As others have said, maybe Icky can replace Hunt or Lewis in a couple years when he's fully recovered....IDK. Also not a guarantee, but then you have to figure out his contract and it becomes even more clouded.
    • It's past time to just eliminate it in terms of an event. Just do the voting, name the roster, and move on. When you get down to 6th and 7th alternates it's just absurd. It doesn't mean anything.
