Houston will let Watson rot

Houston might have no QB, RBs, WRs and bad online

They cut Duke Johnson and their starting C Martin.  They also debating on cutting David Johnson.  Their first pick this year is in 3rd round.  Yikes.

Houston Chronicle's Aaron Wilson reports the Texans want to keep David Johnson for 2021 but at a lower salary.

Johnson is set to make $8.5 million in 2021, but the Texans can save $6.4 million against the cap by releasing him. If D.J. became a free agent, he certainly wouldn't sign for more than the $8.5 million he's scheduled to make, so it makes sense for the two parties to agree to a paycut and enter the season as the unquestioned starter. Assuming Johnson returns, he'll have RB2 appeal if Deshaun Watson stays and doesn't sit out. If Watson is traded or sits out, Johnson will struggle for top-24 production. He's a classic boom-bust RB2/3 in early fantasy drafts with Duke Johnson out of the way. The Texans' first pick in the 2021 NFL Draft isn't until Round 3, so Johnson is unlikely to face rookie competition next year. It all comes down to Watson's situation.

And no one is forcing the Texans to keep him, either.  Contracts don't mean poo in sports.  Teams drop players all the time. Trade players. Cut them. Etc...  I don't really care that he has a contract; he doesn't want to be there, and it is to their benefit to find a way to handle that.

Plus the situation has changed in strange directions since then.

Hence the guarenteed part.... if dropped he's still guarenteed.

there's no disservice here and this isn't a precedent.

there's no reason for Houston to torpedo its new GM and new HC just to try to force a millionaire to play when he refuses to...

its just funny given how Watt was treated...

Sure it is.

Sure there is...

Watt is done -- this player is just getting started -- two completely different issues

yeah, this isn't just a player waking up one morning and deciding he regrets his contract and wants to go elsewhere.

...this isn't really a precedent-setting situation unless Houston's owner makes it so.

Trying to force a superstar to play for a team he refuses to will create a much bigger situation...

We're talking about a team that is entering a full rebuild with a new coach and new GM... it isn't surprising that the franchise players want a chance to chase their dreams elsewhere.

That's exactly what it is.

Again, exactly what it is.

So what?

Fact is these players are under contract to the Texans and are obligated to play for the McNair's

So sad, too bad...

Not sure this was mentioned yet but...

The Texans currently project at $17,914,930 over the 2021 salary cap according to OverTheCap.com. With big roster needs all over the place, general manager Nick Caserio and his staff of cap wizards are working overtime to solve that riddle all on its own. If the Texans trade Deshaun Watson, the cap will absorb another $21.6 million in dead money spread out over the next several years, hitting Houston for $5.6 mil in 2021 (which would put Houston at $23.5 mil OVER the cap, for those following along at home). Maybe, just maybe, we can thank Bill O’Brien for screwing salary cap things up so bad that Houston is saved from themselves.

Damn...gonna be really hard to trade him

Already 17 million over and an additional 21 million in dead money to trade him, plus the salaries of anyone they trade for?

That's not difficult. That's impossible.

It literally takes 2 seconds to check this stuff. Did you even bother reading the article Shocker provided? 1) it’s old but 2) they outlined how easy it would be to save money. Which the Texans have already started to do.

Right now Spotrac has the Texans with almost 20 million in cap space. Overthecap has them with 16 million in cap space. Maybe OTC hasn’t updated after the Duke Johnson cut?

Either way, they can save another 6 million by cutting David Johnson but said they’d like to bring him back at a reduced cost. Which will free up more money.

It’s also worth mentioning what draft picks Houston hold this year...

I don’t think many of you realize just how AWFUL this Texans roster is. Now add in the fact they don’t have a pick till round 3... their immediate future isn’t looking good at all.

Rarely if ever can you make an argument justifying why a team would be better off trading their superstar QB but this might actually be that time.

Pretty much exactly where we will be for the next 2, possibly 3 or more  years were we to give up what people are speculating the asking price would be.

We give the farm for one player that NOW has a history of saying fug you organization for moves they made beyond his level of understanding.

"I don't like the moves you made so i will demand a trade".

Why oh why does anyone here want to pay that much, for a player that acts like that? Let's say we pay the farm for him, and after a year he doesn't gel well with our coach, or Teppers big brass ball style so many like to chalk up...and demands a trade again.....what then? When he is proven like Tom Brady the player can wield that kind of sword. But 2 year old player thinks he has that kind of power over a billion dollar organization...and people here actually want him in  OUR organization??

Of course, all this would be resolved if we decided to use the WFT game to look at developing talent for next year, and with 4 wins and 10 losses, it was understandable to do so.  We lost 5 slots in the top 8.  ouch.  That was expensive culture.

Maybe Rhule learned a bit about coaching for the long haul---sure, I see going for the win if your job was on the line.  It was not. Beating Washington did as much for you winning culture as kissing your sister on the cheek does for you sex life.

    • Here are more fun facts about Peyton Manning's rookie season: Peyton ranked 3rd in total passing yards, 5th in passing touchdowns, 4th in 1st-down completions, 11th in TD%, and 8th in completions that were 20 yards or more.  Now let's look at how Bryce compared to his peers: 20th in total passing yards, 28th in passing TDs, 21st in 1st-down completions, 31st in TD%, and 27th in completions that were 20 yards or more.  To put it mildly, Peyton showed plenty of flashes as a franchise quarterback. Bryce? Not so much, almost none at all, as a matter of fact. Oh, and Peyton is legit 6'4", literally head and shoulders above Bryce. I sometimes wonder if Bryce defenders are sentient at all.
