I think its more because of where he was drafted than anything.  He was a top five pick, and to some that means a lot.

Personally, I wouldn't mind signing him and giving him a try, as long as the contract is cheap/not long term.  But I have a feeling some qb needy team will pay him more than we should.  Which is ironic since he is leaving a qb needy team.

I wouldn't really protest having him in the mix but he's a guy who's tendencies aren't far off from Teddy's. Nothing about expecting Trubisky to be the answer everyone is desperate for seems logical.

There's a lot of truth there.  Watson is an outstanding QB who can elevate those around him.  But he can't do it alone.  There doesn't exist a QB who can.  Cam Newton came as close as anyone I've ever seen to doing it, but ultimately he couldn't do it.

I don't think you can win a SB with TB5 / Alex Smith / etc in this day and age.  I do think you can win one with Tannehill . . . and maybe Trubisky if his career goes to the same cadence as Tannehill.  I'd rather have a guy with an NFL proven 64% completion rate, 25-13 record and 2:1 TD to INT ratio over a guy coming out of college unless that guy coming out was Andrew Luck / Trevor Lawrence / Peyton Manning level.

Yep. QB is a HUGE piece of the puzzle and by far the biggest piece, but ultimately if you have enough big holes on your roster even the best of QBs won't be able to hide them all. Just look at Mahomes in this year's SB for the latest example.

There is an awful lot of stupid in this thread so it is nice to see some reason.

Trubisky is basically in the "only a little better than Teddy" category.

That said, he needs to come cheaply. Anything that isn't cheap or is more than 2 years is just repeating the mistakes of last offseason. Sign him to a reasonable backup QB contract, as that is what he actually is.

I could get behind this type of deal. Worst case scenario, he's an improvement over TB. best case scenario, he balls out and we extend him after 2022. FWIW, cutting TB post June 1 saves us $8M, so it's basically an even swap.

I would not want to pay him $8.3 mil. At that rate, let him go elsewhere. I was thinking more in the $4-5 mil range.

You said win with any roster. The Texans won fewer games than we did.

I didn’t feel like this needed clarification but apparently it does.

Tennessee has a really good roster. They have the best RB in the NFL, a top 10 receiver, a franchise LT just on offense.

Byard and Jackson are two of the best in the league at their positions.

A Tannehill/Trubisky QB is taking that team to the playoffs and that’s it in a good year. Hardly ever advancing and certainly never a serious SB contender.

Deshaun Watson is taking that team at least to the AFCCG and probably with DH..to the Super Bowl.

So can we not turn this into “there is more to a team than the QB” nonsense?

    • I don't think so. I think once you're measuring electronically, the spot is where the sensor says it is. So if it says half yard short of the line to gain, that's the spot. Now how that works with scrums and the ball moving on two minute drills and poo is anybody's guess.
