This is when analytics goes too far. I could argue that the Horn pick could have been one of the most important picks in the last decade if:

Horn is a lockdown corner (very possible) and Darnold is a future top 10 Qb (also possible. Not as likely. But possible). 
 

Basically if Darnold is a 4500 yard, 30TD, 10 or less Int player with this team then the pick solidifies the Panthers as a future monster in the NFC much like the Hawks were with the Legion. Imo other than Lawrence, Darnold has just as much potential boom as any other QB in this class. Combine that with the EXTREMELY rare traits for Horn...it was the right pick.

I agree that the FO should care what Tepper thinks of the picks since he can fire them. I don't think the leash gets any shorter if Fields does well and Darnold doesn't. If the team is still looking for a QB in 2 or 3 years, then yeah, it'll be a different story.

Darnold is 3 years proven bust, oh he played for the Jets, look at Tannehill in Tenn, it was Gase, in Brady's system, Rhule can coach him up, Fitterer is not Marty,(who was actually pretty good with first round picks, Fitterer the jury's still out) all these excuses for why he should be good here but when he's still throwing more INTs than TDs what's the argument then?

I didn't really think all that highly of this year's choices.

Sticking with Bridgewater was a non-starter.

Stafford would have been good, but only a short term solution.

Trading for someone like Watson or Wilson would have cost too much.

Moving up high enough in the draft to get one of the top choices would also have cost more than I'd have been comfortable paying, and I had concerns about all of those guys anyway.

Darnold? I was iffy on that idea, but what we have up for him was reasonable (especially given that we got most of it back by trading down in the draft).

So for now, I'm just in wait and see mode.

Drafting a player that turns into the best RB or DB in the entire NFL....doesn't actually mean anything in today's NFL.  That isn't how you go about winning in today's NFL.   Those are complimentary pieces to your QB driven team. 

The key to real and lasting NFL success is finding a QB.   Nothing really matters until you find one.  Can you win without one? Maybe.  But it generally is a one year fluke and you are right back to not mattering. 

 

I agree with you that you can’t win without a good qb.  However, the staff believe Darnold (top 3 pick) is as good as the other qb’s not named Lawrence and Wilson in this draft.

It's strange to me like there's no QBs coming out in 2022 and beyond. Yes, we passed on Fields but we have a plan to see if a 23-year old #3 overall pick could be the answer. He may or may not be.

However, there will be QBs available to draft next year...and the year after that...and yup... the year after that.

Rattler

Willis

Slovis

Riddler

That's just pre-season guesses. Lots of other guys out there that could pull a Wilson/Burrow and move into the upper echelon next year.

You don't chase bad QBs, you get the capital to go after good ones.
