Grier thoughts on Darnold (conversation from other thread)

Darnold will be a better QB this season.  The question that we all have and one that will only be answered at seasoned end is this, how much better?

In the end his success or failure looks to be all on him.  I'm looking forward to seeing if he's got it in him to silence to doubters myself.  Either way it cannot be as madding as watching Teddy sh*t the bed in crunch time.

seems like a great teammate. like I said. a bro.

So basically, Touchdown Jesus is going to be Clipboard Jesus.  I mean, Charlie Whitehurst had a 10 year NFL career.   That's a great gig in reality.

Sounds like a guy with zero confidence in his own ability to be a starter

a long time ago I drew John Isner in a statewide tournament in the 2nd round. I was much lower ranked than him and he was pretty well known for how good he was. He was doing national tournaments then. I was probably 12 or 13. I had a big serve, especially for someone my age, and I'd never seen someone my age hit it back harder than I put it in.

But it was his serve that blew my mind. I'll never forget I went to chip his serve early in the match, and there was so much spin on it, it knocked my racquet out of my hand. He beat me that day like 0-1.

that was when i kinda realized i needed a plan b because guys like that were playing a different game.

This is what a lot of people from WNC realized after playing with/against Cameron Maybin or Madison Bumgardner. Those dudes were just different. I knew some really, really good players who went on to play d1/d2 ball. Those two dudes were just on another planet.

you gotta wonder what that's like when players get up to the pros and realize that they just don't belong

more power to him. hang out for a few years, live the life, get some stories, then fug off and figure out what you want to do.

Well, if you think about it he's gotten paid handsomely to hangout with and sit on the sidelines with his hometown team for the last four years.  He hasn't had to contribute a damn thing other than his time.  I think any of us would love to be in his shoes right now, I know I would.

The OG Clipboard Jesus earned 17 million dollars to just chill out with Rivers.  It's a probably the greatest gig in the NFL.

That is basically a lot of the 6th rounders to UDFA's. That is why I always chuckle when the Huddle gets so excitable about those guys. The odds of them hitting and being long term NFL starters are pretty long.

Sometimes there is just a level above you and it can't be bridged by any amount of hard work.

My buddy went golfing with Grier recently. Had a discussion wtih WG, and WG was pretty open about the transition and mentioned that the game is just really fast compared to college. WG knows this is the year that could be it for him. There were a few other tidbits, but the one thing that was really cool to hear:

SD seems like a QB that just has it all together. Super smart dude and probably will be a great starter for us -WG

Why would anyone poo this post?

I respect that but Will is a professional QB in his prime years, on a team desperately looking for one, and has been in the pole position to take the starting job ever since he was brought here. He seems like a cool guy but if that quote is accurate bro doesn't even see himself as the starter of the Panthers and that's kinda sad.

    • If he sucks again and the stands are empty by week 5 they pull him. He will ride the pine. Tepper will not be embarrassed again. Tepper will be on the sideline with a headset calling plays by week 6. Dan will be running water to players and bringing them towels by week 8 if we suck again. Coach C will be so rattled he won't come out of the locker room.
