Well, that's what happens when you A) draft poorly and B) let good homegrown talent walk (Norman and Bradberry come to mind immediately)

It didn't help that we threw money after bad FA signings which made signing guys like Bradberry and Norman way harder than it should have been.

A look at how the Carolina Panthers are using their money for the 2021 season

This offseason, several teams around the league kicked a lot of money down the road, used voidable years, and restructured some contracts to be able to get under the NFL's 2021 salary cap which is set for $182.5 million.

The Carolina Panthers restructured the contracts of RB Christian McCaffrey, LB Shaq Thompson, and C Matt Paradis and placed the franchise tag on RT Taylor Moton. With so many transactions being made, we thought it would be a good idea to revisit where things are with the Panthers' cap space and to also show where exactly the money is being spent.

Note: The following figures do not include signing bonuses or any other types of bonuses/incentives.

Cap space: $17.5 million (via OverTheCap)

Dead money: $42.6 million (via OverTheCap)

Biggest 2021 cap hits:

RT Taylor Moton - $13.7 (franchise tag)

WR Robby Anderson - $8 million

S Juston Burris - $2.7 million

WR DJ Moore - $2 million

DT DaQuan Jones - $2 million

OFFENSE (via Spotrac)

QB Sam Darnold - $920k

RB Christian McCaffrey - $990k (restructured)

WR Robby Anderson - $8 million

WR DJ Moore - $2 million

WR David Moore - $990k

TE Dan Arnold - $920k

LT Cameron Erving - $990k

LG Pat Elflein - $990k

C Matt Paradis - $990k (restructured)

RG John Miller - $990k

RT Taylor Moton - $13.7 (franchise tag)

Cap hits by position (starters only):

QB: $920K, RB: $990K, WR: $10.9M, TE: $920K, OL: $17.6M, Total: $31.3M

DEFENSE (via Spotrac)

DT Derrick Brown - $1.6 million

DT DaQuan Jones - $2 million

DE Brian Burns - $1.7 million

DE Yetur Gross-Matos - $982k

LB Haason Reddick - $990k

LB Shaq Thompson - $990k (restructured)

LB Jermaine Carter Jr. - $920k

CB Jaycee Horn - not made public

CB Donte Jackson - $2.4 million

S Jeremy Chinn - $848k

S Juston Burris - $2.7 million

Cap hits by position (starters only):

DL: $6.2M, LB: $2.9M, CB: $2.4M, S: $3.5M, Total: $15M (doesn't include Horn)

large part of this problem was cap space.

As bad as Hurney was at drafting after the first round, he was even worse at giving out contracts, which led to our inability to keep players like Josh Norman.

Obviously, when you draft as hideously as Hurney, there's not a lot of guys you want to resign any way.

Now look at all our cap space moving forward, with tons of young talent we'll be able to keep in the future.

So grateful for the new regime.

He was FT'ed we had the money to do that, DG was just feeling himself and pulled the contract. We could have kept Bradberry if we'd not paid Shaq, that was Hurney being Hurney.

An interesting thought is who wanted to STAY here, to be fair some of the over-payments, or dismissals over the years could be for players who had options after that 1st 4 years.

Not saying they all did, but some did.

Shaq Thompson signed a 4 year, $54,433,000 contract with the Carolina Panthers, including a $16,000,000 signing bonus, $27,525,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $13,608,250.

James Bradberry signed a 3 year, $43,500,000 contract with the New York Giants, including $31,980,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $14,500,000

one million difference in annual salary, paid the wrong guy.

You can't look at an annual avg, you have to look at the guaranteed money, Shaq cost less, there's more than a 1M dollar difference.

Bradberry wanted out.  Don't blame him, it was during the transition.  He got paid by the guy that drafted him, and is set for life.

We did want him though.

Now take into account the huge positional salary difference, and the fact that one is good and the other just had an awful season. There’s more to it than guaranteed money. Shaq at 18M next year should be sweet. Or 12M to cut.

What is the NFL fifth-year option?

Players who are selected in the first round of the NFL Draft sign four-year rookie contracts with a team option for a fifth year built into the pact. Teams must decide on to pick of a player's fifth-year option following the end of the player's third season but before May 3 of the following league year.

The option formula, which has been changed for players in the 2018 draft class due to CBA changes, takes into account prior performance, cap situation, Pro Bowl appearances, position salaries and snap count. The fifth-year option is guaranteed and also guarantees the fourth-year option base salary.

Even if a fifth-year option is not exercised, players have the opportunity to negotiate long-term extensions with their team throughout the 2021 season before hitting free agency.

Well during that time we had two of the worst GMs in the NFL when it comes to drafting. Hurney was decent in the first round, DG sucked all around.

DG also decided not to pay Josh Norman, rescinded the tag, and then drafted 2 rookie CBs to start.

It seems we have a real GM this time around.

The new GM hasnt had to do none of this stuff this thread is about yet.

With the new pay scales it just doesn’t make financial sense to resign players unless they are stars or close to it. Most players can be replaced with rookies and second year players. Anyone taken in the 4th round and on is a financial steal in comparison.

The new NFL is about having stars and surrounding them with youth. You have to pay that star $10M a season, but can get away with almost league minimum for the guy next to him.

Getting that second contract just isn’t as easy anymore. Every year the average length of an NFL career shrinks. The percentages of second contracts are shrinking dramatically. For example, a player drafted in the sixth round has less than 7% chance of seeing a second contract.  That is only two to three players on average.  So this isn't Panther specific, but more a knock on the NFL as a whole.  A lot of the blame goes to the rookie pay scale and the GMs taking advantage of cheaper labor.
