We've lost another beat reporter

If you have been around through camp you would know the lack of access is definitely not limited to him. The Panthers have taken control of the local media scene now. Some people will like it that way others will view it as a loss for fans. But that's where we're at.

its not just been tc tho its been YEARS since he offered any real insight just wondering what makes him better?

You might not be wrong about that.

If the team starts winning, maybe we see more insight from reporters.

I doubt it. I just think he wants to control the local media message. Seems like the Panthers go to any and all lengths to restrict media access as much as they can while pushing panthers.com content.

I can't speak for that but at this point we are all losing out in general. Social media has degraded journalism as a whole. But also there is the fact that let's be real there hasn't been much of anything to give true insight on with this team in years. We have either been in turmoil and public feuds with players like Newton or Bridgewater or just getting our butts kicked by the rest of the division. The last time we won anything meaningful was when we were in a win streak with Kyle Allen. That should tell you how low things have gotten. Hope is the best commodity for the moment. If we begin trending up I think you'll see more content here but it won't ever be like it was unless the Panthers pull a 180 on their media approach which is unlikely.

I never saw Igo as a print journalist--that might be my bad, it might not--I see him as more of a photojournalist. He is not a beat writer or a reporter for the team. He's more of a freelancer who had good access to the team. Now, since the Panthers have cut a lot of the more independent types off at the knees, they can't (and shouldn't be expected to) report anything. They don't have access!

Moreover, it's absolutely true that print media has gone through an evolution. These old newspaper organizations are not necessarily worthless, but they need to get real with themselves and stop trying to make people pay for sports news that they can get free. When a story or a report is behind a paywall, it is effectively worthless. That doesn't mean that the reporters for those organizations are, but if thousands of people can't see your story, then it has no value to them.

The Carolina Huddle is a fan forum (and a damned good one)! Sure, I come here for news, but the expectation is that its origins  will be from the Panthers or any national organization that has access to NFL teams. It's not breaking news that makes forums go, it's the discussion around the news, and whatever else that forum members may create of interest surrounding the team that drives the Huddle and all football message boards.

Unfortunately most fans just want the memes and gifs and hot takes offered by Twitter instead of journalism.

We've come to a reality where every single thing that happens in sports requires a reactionary stand to be taken.

I mean, when is the last journalistic story we've got? Something that gave us insights into things we didn't already know about. I don't care about journalism that is nothing but game recaps, stats, and press conference quotes that we all knew about a day before.

Whether it was great or not is another story but its been at least back to when Voth and Gantt were independent.

I've never read the Athletic. It could be ok but I'm not paying for Joe Person.

Some news: This past week was my last with @theobserver. I'm excited to announce that I am now covering the Buffalo Bills for ESPN. Another Panthers-Bills transaction (of sorts) in the books.

Damn, I really liked her too. Good for her, but can we actually keep some good reporters instead of most of these slapdick ones?

    • Just another 1st round QB that never paid off for the team that drafted them or traded for them. It's been like this since the SB began. 36 QBs have now won the SB & only 13 of them have been 1st rounders winning with their original team. Namath 1968, Griese 1972, Bradshaw 1974, McMahon 1985, Simms 1986, Aikman 1992, Elway 1997, Roethlisberger 2005, P.Manning 2006, E.Manning 2007, Rodgers 2010, Flacco 2012, & Mahomes 2019. Only 3 have taken longer than 5 seasons as the starter to win a SB.  4  6  5  4  6  4  15  2  9  4  3  5  2 [the years it takes for these 1st round QBs] 5  1  4  1  3  1  1  2  3  4  [10 of the 36 have won a chip with their 1st team that haven't been drafted in the 1st round. These are the years it took them as a starter] What stands out? Only 2 of these QBs have lost their first championship appearance. Elway took 4 years as a 1st rounder & Hurts took 2 years as a 2nd rounder. Of the 10 non-1st round QBs, 2 are 2nd rounders, 3 are 3rd rounders, 5 are 6th rounders or later. Please stop wasting time on drafting 1st round QBs with such a high failure rate. The remaining 13 QBs are traded or free agent signings. Stafford, Favre, Young, Williams and Dawson are the 5 trades. Peyton Manning & Tom Brady also won for teams as free agents on a short stay as well as being drafted. The lesson here is don't waste your franchise on farming up 1st rounders for the league, and steer clear of trading for a franchise QB. Stick to finding that championship QB by drafting them outside of the 1st round or through free agency.
    • I lost most of the respect I had for Fox in 2010. He should have resigned if he hated the job that much. Instead he stuck for his paycheck and let stuff go to hell.    I burned out on Ron too but my deal breaker issue with him was away from football and after he was gone from the Panthers. He may have been out of his depth but never quit on us.
    • From where they were one year ago to now, pretty incredible. I mean, say what you want about Vrabel he is no Jerrod Mayo.
