The Athletic not very impressed with Sam Darnold

I love it when people say this but have no idea what it means.

If anything CMC bailed out the WRs who couldn't get open numerous times vs 5th string CBs. Re-watching the the game you can see them covered up when he does end up throwing it to CMC. That's called doing what you're supposed to do.

When you put both games on there aren't WRs streaking open all over the place and then he just dumps it to CMC. And he actually skips CMC who was wide open to go deeper on a couple of throws like the one to Anderson. But sure a moron who has no idea about anything would say CMC is bailing out Darnold.

Lol why would we have some random week 2 game against the Aints without Brees circled? Everyone and their mother knows that the critical matchups for us this year and the real games that are "circled" are the Bucs games and Bills game.

In the scheme of reality the Bills game means little (AFC game) the Buccaneers games are also weeks 16 and 18 the playoff picture will be defined pretty well by then.

The only thing I’d like to see more from Sam and Brady is a designed run now and again. He’s got wheels and the bootlegs are great. Not asking for QB draws or option plays like cam but a couple times a game scheme a run to keep the front 7 honest

My kingdom for a good endzone fade to Terrace Marshall or Dan Arnold.

It is so massively obvious he has improved on things he has struggled with for years. Has he made some dumb decisions? Sure, but those are less common than the number of 'wow' throws we see every game. He is a huge upgrade over Teddy and has shown he can drive this team straight into the playoffs. Stop making excuses for his success, we have dominated every football game we have played this year.

Honestly checkdown Teddy could do this with a healthy CMC. Teddy has been balling. Darnold is playing ok. I think CMC is really bailing him out.

We lost EVERY game last year that we did have CMC, even before the first injury.  CMC lost every game he was in.   I think Teddy would have played better here this year, but that ship has sailed.  He's a bronco now.

    • You joke, but hasn't basically the whole team been in Charlotte this past week together? I'm not one to see the random dumb stuff players put out on social media in the offseason and think it means that's ALL they've been doing and not working on their game.  But it's a little strange that all this is coming out at the same time we're seeing tons of stuff with the team in Charlotte together, even if it's just working out and not even official team OTA's or anything. So he gets a pass from me saying anything now, but if he doesn't show clear improvement this season, it then opens him up to some retroactive criticism for some things.
    • Ha-ha, I bet that went through everyone's mind.  Admittedly I don't read all the comments in a thread before I make a post. Great minds think alike!
    • Cam was hitting his stride as a QB in 2017/2018.     This is why I think stats like completion percentage are overrated. As long as a QB is clutch and makes the throws to win the game the rest doesn’t really matter. What good is a check down stat padder if they’re a choker.  Until Norv Turner (and briefly Chud) got here we put Cam in high pressure throwing situations all the time. We also ran the ball on first down more than most teams in the NFL in the Ron era. Coupled with shitty WRs, all that is expressed in his stats. I also assume Cam took the ball in his hands on many occasions rather than trust Funchess to catch the ball.    It was also never Cams job to play the game like someone else. His presence on the field dictated the game in a way that is rarely seen.  He showed he could play the dink and dunk game just before TJ Watt. That didn’t suddenly make him better than his earlier seasons. He just got put in a legit under center  passing game again for first time since his rookie year with Chud.    Ron took the quickest path to success and abused the RPO because his ass was about to get fired.    Cam never got the credit for being the cerebral player that he was. I just think when you are legitimately a human Superman, sometimes the best play is having the ball in your hands. He was a better passer than Delhomme was.
