The Panthers have their first away game of the season Thursday night at Houston Texans. 

 

Here is what I know: 

  • Texans QB Tyrod Taylor is getting an MRI done and likely won't start Thursday. 3rd round rookie Davis Mills will take his place. Imagine getting your first NFL start against this defense. 
  • The Texans have more rushing yards than the Panthers do. They also were not very bad at all passing the ball with Taylor at QB. 
  • The Texans defense isn't bad. They rank in the middle of the league on most categories except for forced fumbles (3). That puts them in the top 5 of the league. 

 

This is not a gimme game, folks. This Texans team even with Davis Mills starting is better than the Jets and we all remember that home game was too close for comfort.

It should be a win for us.  But it's a road game, and a Thursday night where we historically suck.  Time to see if this patchwork offensive line can withstand crowd noise and stay composed. I'm more worried about how our young team faces a road game with high expectations than I am the opponent.

I know against Phil Snow's D, Mills will feel like he's playing whack a mole trying to figure out where the blitz is coming from every play.  He's not only getting his first NFL start against the best D through the first two weeks, he's having to do it with two fewer days to study film and prep for that D.  Since I doubt there is much if any film to be had on Mills anyway and our D is relatively healthy, the short week looks like it's very much in our favor.

I'd be shocked if our game plan was anything other than we're gonna bring it from the first snap and dare the 3rd string rookie to beat us.

Can you imagine Mills studying the tape of the first 2 games.  Probably already feeling the hits coming on Thursday.

As long as the Panthers continue to play hard and fast I like our chances. But this game is not going to be a cake walk by no means.  The team better not start listening to the hype around them and just focus on the next opponent. If they do not stay focused it could go sideways quickly.

      Nothing wrong with it at all until you start telling others they are bad fans or not fans. But you are the good fan because you never say negative stuff about the team.    I did many years of that type of uninformed fanning because there really was no info and coverage like there is with the internet.    I mean, I used to go to the store and get Street and Smith’s annual football issue. That was about the extent of what you could get if you didn’t live in a big city with sportswriters covering and reporting.  There was no video to look at or replay the games and if you didn’t live in the market you could only rarely see your football team play.    TI have fanned since being a kid in the early 1960s, and as late as 1995 - ‘97 I lived in Atlanta and good luck getting more than 3 or 4 games a year on TV. No radio either. No print coverage outside of an AP recap and box unless they played Atlanta.  People today that have always had the network connection don’t know.    I wasn’t very educated about the Panthers until I finally got internet.
