What Panthers’ WR Robby Anderson hopes people understand about his outburst Sunday

Carolina Panthers wide receiver Robby Anderson admitted that he was frustrated during Sunday’s 21-18 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, but insisted Wednesday that his outburst was out of passion for wanting to help his team win.

Anderson’s comments Wednesday was the first time he spoke with media members since Sunday’s game after a Fox camera caught him yelling at position coach Frisman Jackson.

Anderson said he meant no harm, and he hopes that the incident shows how passionate he is about winning.

 

“Tom Brady does that and he’s one of the greatest,” Anderson said. “Players get mad; coaches yell at players. It’s nothing I’m ashamed of. ... I think that’s a good thing so the world can see I care. I would hope that that’s how my teammates view it.”

Panthers coach Matt Rhule said Monday that he didn’t have a problem with Anderson’s outburst, as long as things didn’t get personal.

 

“It’s a game of emotion,” Rhule said Wednesday. “We all have to play better.”

The incident happened after quarterback Sam Darnold threw his third interception of the game Sunday. At the time, the Panthers were driving and trying to score the game-winning touchdown or tie the score with a field goal.

Anderson ran a comeback route, and Eagles cornerback Steven Nelson sat on the route and stepped in front of Anderson to pick it off. After the game, Nelson said he knew it was coming because Anderson had been lined up in that formation all game.

That’s what Anderson said he was trying to communicate with the coaching staff. He thought he should run a double move to take advantage of Nelson sitting on the route.

“I felt we could capitalize off that,” Anderson said. “That was my mindset. I have a very high football IQ. I was brought up under veteran legends, Brandon Marshall, Eric Decker. And I study the game, and I study myself. So I know my capabilities, I understand coverages, and I understand football, so it was along those lines.”

 

Anderson hasn’t quite connected with quarterback Sam Darnold this season. He has 12 catches for 179 yards and a touchdown in five games for the Panthers this season. That is tied for fourth on the team.

Last season, Anderson led the Panthers with 95 catches, a career high. He also had 1,096 yards receiving.

Anderson said he felt his role has changed some this year. He has said some of the routes he’s running are different.

But he felt his time would eventually come.

“My goal is to help us win,” Anderson said. “So if I don’t touch the ball and we win, it’s fair game. My ultimate goal is to win. I’m a team player. But losing, I’m a sore loser. ... Everybody on this team — we don’t touch the field to lose. So if we lose and I don’t feel like I contributed as much, then I’d be a little frustrated, but that’s the type of player I am.”

If your ultimate goal is to win, then maybe....oh I don't know.....MAKE A BETTER EFFORT AT GOING AFTER THE FOOTBALL WHEN IT'S THROWN CLOSE TO YOU??? 

I know Sam was not throwing the ball well that game but it takes two to Tango and all that sh-t.

I like when players get frustrated if they aren’t contributing and we lose. 
 

I don’t like when players give less effort on their assignments because they don’t get to do what they want on a play. That’s how you lose.

If his effort in doing his assigned routes matched his rant, he'd be unbeatable. 

And if he knew the guy was sitting on the route, he could have made more effort to contest it. Instead he just stood there looking as surprised as anyone.

I'm sure he was surprised that the ball was thrown straight to the DB instead of him.

I want to see passion on the sidelines.  We need more towel on head -pissed off players when we lose.  I was so mad when we would lose, and Teddy would be smiling at the end of a game.

The receivers are not getting open.  Either Brady is going fix that, or it is going to be a long season.

"WTF is this?", you ask?

It's an article with Robbie explaining his outburst.

It's also a thread where I replied that it would have been nice to see more effort in attempting to catch the thrown ball.

And when I say that, I'm not referring to the game-ending INT.

I'm referring to the DROPPED PASS that would've iced the game in favor of the Panthers ( you remember the 3rd down play, don't you?). 

That's where my ire is aimed at.  

Now if Sam played well from the get-go, that wouldn't even be a blip on the radar but QBs have bad games and it's up to the Receivers to do whatever it takes to help them.

Weird thread, I gained respect for Robby after being 100% straight up in his presser. Him and Snow are the only dudes that do that

Hopefully this will be a wake up call for Brady and Rhule for that matter. You’ve got an opposing cornerback basically saying his job was easy due to a lack of creativity in the WR routes. Good on Robby for bringing it to light.

And they learned it from watching the Cowboys do it the week before.
