O Line Talent Evaluation

Is it just me or do we suck at finding talent on the O line, no matter who our GM is?

The Steelers are starting a 3rd round rookie at center, 4th round rookie at LT, and Trai freaking Turner at RG and they are keeping a clean pocket for Rothlisberger, and he’s a damn statue.

Every damn year it seems like there are rookies starting all over the league and we have 2 rooks who can’t sniff the field.

We are bad at finding offensive talent atp.  Hard to deny this

I do wonder just how different our offense would have looked this year if we had gone Slater/Smith.

DJ had Slater over Sewell and many thought he would be just fine at tackle. Can't cry over spilled milk, but seeing how we ended up with Gilmore and Henderson via trade, and Taylor looks like a long-term piece, it is frustrating. Not to mention taking a long-snapper instead of a need at guard while Jansen is still doing his thing.....pretty pathetic.

I say this as a huge fan of Horn too.

Even one of those moves would hold a drastic difference on our line. The whole Trey Smith falling in the draft was absurd to me and never understood why we didnt take him later in the draft.

The most frustrating part is we took a FRIGGEN LONG SNAPPER over him, while Jansen is still playing at a high level and the interior line continues to be an issue.

And yet, according to these stats, their pass blocking is worse than us.

It's not worth the time/pining thinking about Trey Smith.  Slater, yes, is a legit LT/G we should have taken over Horn.  The second being Sam Cosmi over Marshall Rd2 and not trading down.  Would have been a perfect Rd1-2.

It's all pointless at this stage, but we've got 70th overall in Brady C. and then Moton.  Brady isn't even a for sure future G for us but at least still has the potential IMO for a long term LG.  We have an entire line to build.

We still need a QB

Draft QB round 1. Thats what is going to happen. Rhule will be forced to keep Darnold due to contract and we will have to draft a QB. Thats what is going to happen even if we don't want it to because Rhule will be on the hot seat. It's why we need to start discussing this years QB class. Dan Morgan was just at Pitt this weekend watching Pickett.

I was curious so just glancing at drafts from franchises with somewhat consistent top olines like saints, browns, post luck colts, patriots, cowboys, Bucs…

the amount of olineman in general drafted is actually pretty much on par somewhat, I mean some of those teams draft olineman at least once every draft with a top half pick, and even double dip

but what I notice is their later rounds, they’re able to find real talent such as patriots finding Onwenu in the 5th last year meanwhile we took some unknown CB (shocking)

add that to the fact Panthers make the absolute worst oline FA decisions…can anyone name a good FA olineman that played for average or above more than a single year in our entire history? I can’t

so I would say it is a lack in the ability to evaluate talent, coach talent, and lack of trying in the draft and severely overreaching/poor evaluation in FA
