Is Silver Platter Sam a viable backup QB for Panthers over the long term?

I think he is next season. I mean if we have to pay him that money anyways, may as well be backing somebody up rather than sitting at home. After that he’s free to walk.

Derek Anderson had been a Pro Bowl QB when we got him.

Sam Darnold was a three time winner of "Worst NFL QB." 

So, how is that even a remotely good comparison?

No. He is a player we should hope to play against and never rely on in any capacity on our roster. He is done and washed up.

I have no real reason to think that his current level of play while receiving reps with the 1s and being the starter would suddenly change for the better if he was getting backup reps only.  No way I want him to transition from the starter role back down to backup long-term.

I do think his ability to remain in the league can only be salvaged by playing becoming a backup but I don't expect him to be good, or even acceptable, at it without too much coaching to make the situation viable.

He's way too turnover prone to be even a halfway decent backup qb. 

If I was Rhule I wouldn't let him start another game and try my luck with PJ and the other dude we signed.

Yeah, but I don't think that means we can just cut him.  If we could, what would be the point of a "fully guaranteed contract"?

Agents and the media tend to play really fast and loose with "guaranteed" money on contracts. Seems like there always turns out to be some loopholes for the team.

Well I'm keeping my damn fingers crossed on that one!  If they could somehow get out from under having Sam on the team next season that would be tremendous!
