At the time I think I said I was cautiously optimistic but needed to see more before forming an opinion. Ā

And then Sam gave me the more I needed…

Basically me. Did not believe in him at all, saw some of the warts still being present but was cautiously optimistic. Then regular edition Sam played the rest of the year.

I was concerned that the Panthers defense was undersized, fast and strategic but had not faced a team yet with a powerful running game.

I figured the offense was well so so at best but the defense would have to keep games close enough for them to win some more but they were the worst 3-0 team I've seen early in the season....

As soon as the defense faced a team with a power running game (one where all the starters were intact) they got punched in the mouth and became swiss cheese and I felt my prediction of 6 wins this year would hold true.Ā Ā

Offense looked like one with potential to be tops in the league. We would just have one inconsistent quarter.

Sam was making reads quick and standing in there taking hits and still delivering strikes.Ā

DJ was looking like a problem.Ā

Even after our 4th game against Dallas with the back to back picks I thought we still had something. Refs clearly had it out for us and they stillĀ battled back and made it a one score game with a chance for the D to get a stop and get the ball back.Ā

Then it all unraveled so fast. CMC got hurt, the offense went vanilla, opposing defenses learned we run 3 routes a a game and they could squat on them, WRs forgot how to catch and the Oline turned into what we all knew itĀ would. Sam quickly turned back into Sam sometime during that stretch of games against garbage teams with losing records and then it all comes clear... we are one of those garbage teams too.Ā

Sam was still missing a lot of open guys in those first three games. He was playing well enough to win, so that got lost in the shuffle.Ā

    • A winning record would be nice, but I still have us winning around the 6 to 8 game mark. Realistically we should beat the Jets and Saints, that gets us to 5 wins. After that, we have to face a lot of potential play off teams andĀ our divisional opponents.Ā I think we’ll win 1 or 2 of those games to take us to 6 or 7 wins, perhaps 8 wins if we canĀ spring a further surprise.Ā  Is that enough progress for head coach and QB? I’m not sure, it will depend on performances and output. That said, it’s nice to be back in a position where we are thinking about the play offs.
    • I would tend to agree about not falling into the trap and paying a below average QB, but sometimes situations can ā€œforceā€ a team to pay that QB. For example, if we play ourselves into a 9-8 like record, then what options will we have in the draft? Or do we avoid the draft and trade for or sign someone in free agency?Ā  I’m not convinced by the 2026 QB draft class. There’s some intriguing prospects but no one that really screams ā€œdraft meā€. I’m not sure we’ve got anyone really that stands out as a trade candidate or free agent signing. So although we might not want to commit a big money contract to Young, him playing well and showing progress might force the team’s hand.Ā
    • Realistically we would be looking at no more than a mid round pick for Dowdle or Chuba. Are we really that desperate for a mid round pick? Not really. I would much prefer us utilise the two RBs in a 1-2 punch similar to how we used D-Will and Stewart. After all, Bryce is not Drew Brees. He won’t throw for 300+ yards and carry the team consistently as a passer. So having a strong running game with a 1-2 punch will be beneficial to him, and it will also be beneficial to the RBs because we can spell them and not overwork them.
