Sam Howell declares for the draft

I wouldn’t mind drafting him...if we can trade down and still pick him up. There is always a rush for QBs though. Somehow I’m guessing Rhule won’t draft a QB. He will have to double down on Sam.

The fear is that we somehow take a can't miss situation in this top 6 pick and fumble it. Taking a QB is fumbling it.

There are elite OL and potentially DE(highly unlikely to drop) options available.

Fair enough but at pick #6 I want to shoot a little higher

Playing Devil’s advocate, because of the rookie scale, teams can be a little more open to risk. I don’t want him at all, but the “cost” is relatively low and the reward (potentially) high.

The only thing the Panthers should be allowed to do for the next 2 years is spend all our picks and anybody else’s that’ll let us on OLine.  And then draft some oline.  Only THEN should you draft more oline.  After drafting oline.

… draft oline.

He probably has the second highest floor but I agree his ceiling might be limited. But, I wasn't a big fan of Burrow or Jones either and they seem to being doing well. I would say he is in that "class" of potential starter. Maybe without the obvious intangibles edge for Burrow.

I don't think there are any of these QB's that are remotely safe choices. Hence why I keep saying late first is about when I would start looking at any of them. I realize we probably get at least two in the top 15 drafted, so we will see what happens.

Burrow is playing like one of the best QBs in the league this year so far, I would happily take that "class" of starter.

Fans get caught up in this idea of "floor" and "ceiling", Tom Brady could be in the draft and half this fan base would say his "ceiling" is too low.

All things being equal everybody wants the bigger arm or better mobility but there is another aspect of "ceiling" that is hard to define.  What does that QB do on 3rd and long when his first read is covered, does he automatically know where his second read is going to come open?  It's so hard to quantify a QB's thinking process, hence the reason QB evaluation is so difficult.

Personally, I feel better about Pickett and Howell, Corrall and Willis make me more nervous.  Also, I would feel better about trading down and drafting one.  That extra pick would help mitigate the risk somewhat.  For example, I might take Howell and a 2nd over Pickett at 8.

Having that 2nd would really be good right now, you could stay put and take a LT and then try and package the 2nd to move back into the back half of the first round if you were determined to take a QB.

Sure but in theory there is top tier talent in the 6/7 range and normally it falls off a cliff past pick 10 or so.   So value wise it would be much wiser to pick the oline instead of "reaching" for a qb just because he is cheap.  I also seriously seriously doubt that Howell is #1 on their board.

Again I dont know if the corrall injury helps or hurts the value of our position.  I just know that we most certainly will be in striking distance of the tier 1 line talent and it would be foolish to walk away from that simply in the name of trying to recoup some of our picks due to a bad trade

I'm saying if they insist on a qb.

I don't want them to draft a qb at all, o-line all the way.   Preferably after trading down.

But these are Matt Ruhle's Panthers we're talking about.

teams that need QBs don’t pass on QBs.

Slightly ot but he's absolutely playing his ass off.  If we can get anything like that then sign me up.  Thanks to him Cincinnati might get their first playoff win since Super Mario Bros 3 was a hot new video game.

    • I get it's subjective and I said "PFF rated him as" one of the top deep ball passers during that time, which is an accurate statement.  They are still a group of professionals that look at film and data in order to make their judgements/ratings.  These people whose data has been incorporated into a lot of teams' staffs view Bryce's deep throws as some of the best in the league during that stretch.  That tells me that he can probably throw a deep pass vs the Huddle's version of he is small and didn't do it his rookie year so he must not be able to.  That and literally seeing him do it just makes me feel he is more than capable of doing so.   Do you think PFF is skewing their opinion to prop up a QB in a bottom tier franchise?  It's just another group's opinion and I feel is pretty respected around the league currently.  It's not the gospel truth or anything.
    • I still remember how happy I was that gettlegut was not the GM once he picked Jones, that was a firing pick and well..... If not for the raiders drafting Clelin Ferrell, it was the biggest draft day mistake in the last 20 some years.
    • He had 251 passing yards. 3 passing touchdowns and 2 rushing touchdowns. All in all a very impressive game. Problem is I do not envision his rushing ability translating like that over the course of the upcoming season. Yeah it will be something to account for from time to time but one it's not sustainable and two you don't want to put his durability to the ultimate test against a motivated defender willing to take a penalty and a fine. And plus with our backfield. Two 1k yard rushers. That's what they're here for. Then we have a much improved WR room. That means Bryce has to elevate those passing numbers substantially. The fact of the matter is regardless of circumstances it did take him 23 games to surpass Kyle Allen's single season passing yardage from 13 games in 2020. And that is not a high bar by any means. Whatever QB tier Bryce ends up in from here amongst his peers this upcoming season when it's all said and done it will be with his arm.
