Disagree. If I was a potential candidate, I'd be looking at this as an opportunity as a stepping stone to a HC gig. You come in, do your job and improve the offense and you are looking at HC interviews the next season. Worst case scenario, you come in, do your job, and Rhule still sucks and you put yourself in line for interm HC and potential full time gig. If you can't come in and do your job, you probably aren't looking at getting a HC job anyway.

With no QB? No OL? A meddling college coach? Not exactly an ideal stepping stone gig unless it's a stepping stone to retirement.

These sound like someone other than Matt Rhule's idea.

For O'Connell, this would be a lateral move since he's already an OC. He'd have to be out of contract or have permission. Either way going from the Rams to the Panthers with no advancement sounds weird.

Could they be being told it might turn into a head coaching job? Not by Rhule but yeah. That'd leave you with a staff full of Rhule loyalists though (not so sure that works).

If it gets to the point where Rhule isn't the coach (yes we already there) it's a poo season again and it's gonna be a clean house. That interim hc could turn into permanent... only draw I see here for anyone

First Mistake:  Instead of firing Marty "total of 3 winning seasons" Hurney and bringing in a top shelf GM to lead in a rebuild, Dave "Wrong Way" Tepper allows Marty to help select the Panthers next head coach.

Second Mistake:  The very next year, Dave "Wrong Way" Tepper fires Hurney as GM and lets Matt Rhule choose his own GM.  Since Rhule has final say on all football decisions, no potential top shelf GM wants to come to Carolina.  Instead, Panthers chose someone from an organization in clear decline.

Third Mistake:  After two historically bad seasons (the sort of W/L record that resulted in the termination of all previous Panthers HCs) Dave "Wrong Way" Tepper chooses to double down on Rhule, rather than admit his mistake and fire the guy.  The search now begins for an NFL experienced OC that will presumably take direction from an unsuccessful, NFL novice HC.

TL/DR:  Why does Dave "Wrong Way" Tepper continue to try and wag the dog by the tail?

Agreed.  It would have to be someone with a body of work already, so this coming year can essentially be memory wiped from their next job interview.

It's potentially career suicide for a young up and coming OC.

Yeah I think Doug Pederson could do it but he's probably gonna jump right back into a head coaching job in Jacksonville or Denver at this point. Not a great year for us to contend for a legit coach.

Okay?

At the end of the day you tried to state that we weren't targeting up-and-coming coaches.  When we clearly are targeting an up-and-coming coach. Are you now suggesting we shouldn't be targeting people like O'Connell, because they won't want to come here?  And if so, then why imply that us not targeting rising coaches (even though O'Connell is one) is a bad thing?

Damned if you do and damned if you don't.

It's a lateral move to a worse situation. Not sure why he'd want that.

To be clear though, I don't have a problem with going after O'Connell. I do, however, think there are better candidates, and guys for whom this would be a promotion rather than a lateral move.

We're apparently not reaching out to those guys, at least not yet.

Would anyone really be interested in calling plays for Carolina with Rhule's reported ego, and not having any offensive weapons if we trade CMC? DJ reached 1k receiving yards again but he doesn't appear to be anything special (hopefully, yet). Robby has regressed since his payday. No QB, no O-line, and unproven RB (Hubbard) and TE (Tremble).

I'm good with this.. Don't go after the hot new position coach who has never called plays before.. Setting it up to complain again that we have a OC who doesn't make adjustments in the 2nd half.. Or a guy who will be a yes man to Rhule.. Get a OC with nfl experience and HC to help or Replace Rhule.. Somebody proven body of work and a system and scheme they've tested.. To get some stability in the offensive side of the building..

    • Hmmm... not a good start. Maybe I'm reading too much into this but after the guy who has been carrying your offense expresses frustration with his sudden lack of use and your HC just blows it off and confirms they haven't even talked, your PR team decides to use the guy who should be his backup as their poster boy hyping this week's game? Yikes. Hard not to interpret that as another slap in the face.
    • For some reason this is becoming a disturbing trend in the NFL. Teams are shutting down one part of their offense without causation from the opposition. Shane Steichen did it an overtime loss against Kansas City last week with the best back in the NFL. Pete Carroll allowed Chip Kelly to completely abandon the run game against Dallas the week before he was fired in Oakland as the OC. Matt Lafleur abandoned the pass instead choosing to rely on a bottled up run game when we clearly were having issues with the passing game. Big brain play callers some of them HCs are what the league wanted along with high powered offense and these dudes are making some of the dumbest situational calls I've ever seen. At least most of them are young and can learn, Canales included. I remember Norv Turner trying to throw the ball around the yard in a certain SuperBOWL, going in at halftime down 13-6. Emmitt Smith said get me the d*mn ball and took over in the 2nd half. Remember Kyle Shanahan in the 2nd half vs. the Patriots? This shite happens to the best and the brightest. We are just actively seeing it play out in real time just like Atlanta and Dallas fans before us.  Also, not saying Canales is going to become either of those, just begging/hoping for our sanity he gets his shite together if he's going to be our HC.
