Will the run defense hold up?

No doubt, there were some games that the run d looked really bad.  The Minnesota game comes to mind.  Can't help but wonder if part of that was mental, as the defense got tired of watching the offense contribute nothing at all.

There were games where I don't think the guys on the sidelines could bear to watch the game at all. Sometimes that was echoed in the coaching box.

And us at home...

He is only 14?!?!?!?!  Damn...

Before I stopped getting the paper, once a year they would list the top HS players on a whole page. I want to say 2014-ish and my god they have grown. Nearly all OL and DL were 320+ and looked it as well. The QBs were 6'5 220+, just insane the jump form my days when once one player on the team was 320+ and the whole divsion may have had 10 total. HGH and god knows what else...... for some is just getting 3 square meals and BOOM.

The more I think about replacing Riddick by committee apraoch the less I look forward to it. It would be one thing to roll that way because of injuries but to do it willingly with the adjustment issues we showed last year just makes me think we will see a completely telegraphed D for any OC with half a brain to pick apart. Snow's scheme already stretches the front 7 to far IMO. I just can’t imagine how that works for him with lesser talent on a more difficult schedule.

The factors for me...

Personnel acquisition prior to this offseason was skewed to the defensive side of the ball.

Defensive player acquisition has tended to emphasize speed over power.

Rhule and Snow basically built a defense that was heavily geared toward defending the pass.

Defense looked good early but once teams figured out they could run on us, it fell apart.

Not sure if Snow tried any major changes or adjustments, but if he did, it didn't show.

Bottom Line for me: What defensive improvement we've seen is probably due to the personnel emphasis, but the coaching and scheme have been lacking.

Not sure that changes this year.

Rhule built the Colts defense from the Manning years.

Basically.

But that defense had the advantage that Manning was always putting teams down by a touchdown or two (or three) early so it was more difficult to commit to the run.

Bob Sanders was a big factor there too. The difference in that defense with him and without him was night and day.

No doubt.  You can kinda get away with it just due to Manning being the best QB I've ever seen.  That said, he should have a LOT more rings, and likely would have it they were to have focused a bit more on that side of the ball.

Fast is great if you have a high powered offense, when you have our offense, it just means that offensive coaches on the on the other team really don't need to game plan against us.

    • Well bois, we gave the Devils their due! Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery... The jersey boys have been trying to jack our steeze for a few years now. They've followed our blueprints and studied our tape. Every offseason, they pounce on our sloppy seconds in a Newark minute. Quick with the puck, ferocious on the forecheck and stifling team defense. Down to the colors, this is this closest we'll come to having to play ourselves in Ole Stanley's Hockey Hoedown. As the postseason began, Rod stood flexing in the gym mirror and saw this guy staring back from the void... (Shutters) When beating us at our game didn't work, Timo and the Tri-State Trash tried to tango instead. Outside of a bitchass cheapshot on Freddie, that poo didn't work either. Their goon squad was getting wrecked by our bantam weights. As much as we all wanted to see Svechy or Staal Bunyan literally break someone in half after the Great Dane went down, they didnt need to. Our munchkins were monsters! Jarvis obliterating giants at the blue line, Logan laying the Stank on dudes twice his size and Blakers blasting Timo into next season. It was beautiful to see! (Side note: Does JBlo wear lead weights under his pads? 170lbs shouldn't be able to hit that hard!) We closed it out in 5, for the gentleman's sweep. Only team in the league to win a series in each of the past 7(?) seasons! And, this was supposed to be a rebuilding year... Onto the awards: Key To The Series : 6 for 19 - .316% IT FINALLY WORKED!!! MVP : 16/180 g/s - .911 save% - 2.53 gaa Seriously, without this dude, we would've won in 3! (Trust me bro) 3rd Star : 6/94 g/s - .936 save % - 1.59 gaa The Great Dane   2nd Star : 3 g - 5 a - +1 - 20:38 toi/g - 18 hits - 3 bs - 58.1% fo 3 PP goals and the 2OT series winning goal! WOOAAAHHH NELLY!!!!   And, your 1st Star of the series : 5 g - 1 a - +3 - 16:48 toi/g - 16 hits - 1 bs - 1 tk - 50% fo Zero, I repeat, zero penalty minutes for the series! MISSSTAAAHHH SVEEECHNIKOOOV!!!!!! Onto The Next: Now, we wait for the Habs to make it a nasty 7 game slog, while we recuperate. And, hopefully, get Nikishin, and some of the other black aces some real peactice time. We are gonna need those guys at some point. Because, if you think the Devils were dirty, hoooo boy, wait till you see what's next...
