Can we afford to sign him long term or franchise tag him (which may piss him off.) Corral is an unknown commodity and with the injury, who knows. Sam is gone after this year and P.J is P.J. What should they do if he actually plays well?

With our cap debt next year I'm not sure we could afford to tag him, tag would be $30M and we're already $20-30M in debt depending on how much we can roll over from this year. If you sign him to multiple years you can make 2023 mostly bonus money that won't count towards the cap immediately. Watson's cap hit is like $10M this year but he got $40somethingM in signing bonus.

Mayfield is definitely capable of a top 8/probowl type year. But he also can get injured and have a year like last year. You pretty much have to give him the contract/make him your franchise QB if he has a great year. If he has just a good year, I imagine the Panthers will explore options in the draft, or check on Lamar Jackson/Huntley trades (both are free agents and Tepper will do anything to get a franchise QB)

Other than last year, if he duplicates the previous years id be totally down to sign him to a 3 year deal. I don’t think you would want anything more than that to see how he does, and you are not crippled if things don’t work out. The thing with Baker is that you know he is talented, he Can lead grown men, has an alpha mentality, and you know what his floor is. I don’t think a 3 year deal for someone like him will be something that will haunt us if it does not work out. It totally depends on his performance this year, but it is a very low risk/high reward move. Dude is on another level compared to Teddy/Sam “Gumby” Darnold and I can say that with complete confidence before he even takes a regular season snap for us.

I think the long term deal is more complex than just Mayfield playing well. He may decide that he doesn't want to be here for a variety of reasons(bigger contract, better opportunities with another team, Panthers coaching change, etc).

If he plays VERY well, I am definitely not against getting him on a long term deal. 

It might get hairy if he plays fairly well but the Panthers don't win many games. If that happens, how much money are we going to be willing to commit? 

Pro Bowl caliber season might also lead to a massive deal, however. Keep that in mind.

I believe Sam can come off the books next year, right? However, other pieces will have to be kicked down the road.

tbh I think Baker will be pretty loyal to Carolina because they are the only ones to "believe" in him. I think if its between one team paying slightly more and carolina he would go Carolina. (this is all based on if he plays really well this year)

      Hawks said nah we good and sent him to the shadow realm aka the Wizards. Cold blooded. I mean they're 2-2 in a series with a young up and coming Knicks team largely through 34 year old CJ McCollum. Even if they ultimately lose the series at least they are there and have something to build on. I think Hornets fans are just beaten down and lack the objectivity to assess the situation. They think we are going to get so much worse if and when we finally change gears. Worse how? We've already been a lottery team for years now. We've already been looking to win our first playoff series in about a quarter century. We already can't get past the play in and in failing to do so we have completely embarrassed ourselves twice looking like we don't even belong. Honestly there is absolutely no excuse for a team like the Magic to be more competitive and successful than us in the playoffs. Absolutely disgusting. But that's just me. I was fuging lit when we got the Hornets back in Charlotte but that is old old news. It's time for these boys to get into a playoff series. Enough is enough. If they can't do it for 2026-27 then they need to make wholesale changes regardless.

      Not one single pick that is asking me why we drafted a guy in the first place. It was a guy we needed and/or a guy that had certain traits making them stand out. Best of all, I feel everyone we drafted are capable of stepping onto the field this year and have a meaningful role (even Kuwatch on special teams). Obviously, nothing is guaranteed but I'm not seeing any huge flags on guys because they're risky projects or massive overreaches.
