You nailed nailed it.  After looking at this roster for next year, seeing our cap situation and seeing that this draft lacks super stars at the top but has good depth, I have come to same realization.  Build the team, find a competent HC, where that HC finds a stud OC and stop chasing franchise QBs for the time being.  When the time is right, snag the QB and stop forcing it. I'm thinking of the Pittsburgh situation when they drafted Big Ben.  He had success because while he played good as a rookie, the surrounding parts made him even better.

We could go this route or continue the failed Matt Rhule model or sabotage a brand new staff as we have seen in Denver when they sunk most of their resources into Russell Wilson.

It's going to be hard to find an offensive coordinator that's a stud without a quarterback. It'll also be impossible to retain them without them being given the head coaching job. That's why a lot of teams bring in offensive coordinators for head coaching positions as you lose them every couple years if they're competent.

So it looks like we will procure another top 10 pick this draft.

I'm curious, is anyone for moving up to take one of the top two QB prospects??

This is exactly what will happen. Getting the wins for now may feel nice at the moment for the current coaches and players, the pick price for a new franchise QB keeps going up.

I'm all for them winning out, as long as we all understand that it means many of this and next year's picks disappearing as @Krovvy said.

I just don't think our GM is the type to move up in the first round.

But only time will tell.

No, not in this draft. I would just take a shot on one of the other qb's myself. It just depends on who's taken before us or who's available around our selection.

It's always about the totality of the team, and the leaders directing that collective. An elite QB makes things easier, of course, but it's not a prerequisite to winning. If you have many of the right pieces in place and competent QB play, you can still be a consistent winning team.

Ideally, you want it all, but there's always holes on every NFL roster. It's about building the best group of 53 (55) and coaching staff / front office that you can on a rolling basis.

Lateral moves are pretty rare these days and someone is stupid to pass up a promotion because they aren't assured a ideal situation.  If said newbie OC gets looks in 2-3 years for a HC job, that's okay, it means the Panthers should be a playoff team.  Worry about the future as it approaches, worry about the present...now.

You have a better chance finding a good to great qb than you will an elite one in the draft. Elite qbs are very rare but good qbs can be found in almost every draft if you have a smart staff and a little bit of luck. Great qb's only show up in the draft every 4 or 5 drafts and are usually overlooked.  It's It's all about scheme fit.

    • Yeah, Bryce has to put that a little deeper. But XL can't allow the pick there. Gotta become the DB when you're undercut like that.
    • You see, I just don't subscribe to a cookie cutter type of philosophy when it comes to trades or team building. Every situation is different. Many may disagree, but I think that FOs that can't draft impact-players beyond the first round aren't really viable.  Just for argument's sake, because we all know this hypothetical trade is as realistic as the moon being made of cheese, Micah is a young dawg really just beginning his prime and is arguably the most valuable pass rusher in the league. He could realistically play at a high level for at least the next five to seven years. Parsons' current trajectory is Canton. That being said, he's not some old merc that fits the mold of "one piece away," he's a core piece to any defense for the better part of the next 10 years. Pass rushers of his caliber and age don't generally become available, so, sure, he'd help an elite team, but he's also a fit for a younger team that's building. I know that you don't agree, but it's all good. I respect your rationale.
    • Here's my not important take on this subject.  Who wouldn't want a pass rusher of his consistency?  I would absolutely love to have him on this defense.   Would I give up Brown in a trade for him.  Nope, I would never do that.  Interior linemen are way to important to be settling for whatever you can get at the position.   Would I trade 2 firsts,  plus fork out a big contract for him?   Without knowing if Young is for sure going to be our long term, franchise guy,  there is no way I'd be okay with letting go 2 firsts. As for the contract that he'd demand, I just dont get caught up with NFL contracts.  They have been out of control for decades.  So I really dont get upset over big contracts. It's just a fact of life in the NFL.  You HAVE to pay for talent.
