I believe garbage time is classified as final 8 minutes of the 4th quarter and 3 possesion+ score difference

The figure seems to suggest it is when a game is between win probability of 20 and 80% for either team.

(in this case, not in general usage obviously)

Yea the Bengals game was an embarrassment but that’s included in the calculation. The defense really is that good. It’s stacked with really good to great players. It’s so good that it’s still the best within these parameters even factoring in a few shitty performances.  They’ve still got some room to grow, and part of those good performances is how weak our schedule has been this year, but to have a defense as young as ours is and performing at the level they are, the future is bright.

Garbage time in this case is being classified as having either less than 20% chance of winning or greater than 80% chance of winning.  Effectively when the game is out of reach for either team.  It's a completely pointless stat.  It could exclude drives in the second quarter of games for example if you happen to be down (or up) by 21 points.

In the NFL, when it comes to defense, there is really only one stat that matters:  Scoring.  We are middle of the pack right now in that category, 13th.  Somewhat interestingly, we are a top 10 defense at home, and a bottom 5 defense away from home.  This feels about right to me.

We have some pieces, but we need to put them together.  We also need an offense that can give a good defense some time to rest.  We're doing better lately.

If it weren't for the Bengals debacle, it probably would look even better.

Most likely the bengals game was thrown out almost entirely.  Win probability doesnt start at 50% if a good team is going against a bad team and it doesnt count any plays after probability is 80% to lose or 20% to win or whatever so after we went down a td or so the rest of that game was probably thrown out entirely lol

Looks like it was 75% for the Bengals pretty much from the kickoff.

    • I think those silver helmets look great. The logo is fairly primitive looking but I understand why it is used.  The dayglo type blue top/bottom, I think looks like a cartoon. IOW not good. White on white is a classic look, no issue. Black on black I can take but prefer black pants with a blue top. Or white pants with the blue top.  That is about as much fashion content as I am comfortable posting. Maybe go to E or Bravo for this stuff.
    • Remember when the NFC South was the toughest division (circa 2002-2006 when every NFC Championship game featured one of the four of us?)
    • You are a fair point argument guy, but I disagree that Bryce got us out of that Miami hole. You know who Rico Dowdle is, right?  Just a small quibble.    IMO when I look at him and see his output in a typical game I imagine what he did that a replacement level guy wouldn’t or couldn’t have done.  And I have trouble seeing much difference.  So assuming they can’t replace him with someone’s backup, not everybody’s but there are guys sitting, assuming they can’t replace him for probably less money would potentially be an erroneous assumption.    But based more on his relationship with the team and the guys making the decisions, the question of will they? I tend to see them sticking with him.  I never wanted him at all. But after all the misery of the Bryce era so far, I don’t have a problem with waiting until the season is complete to decide. Bring it on, I can take it.  So I am not ranting that he needs to go, although I have certainly done that and can’t say he has changed my mind to this point.  He still could.  We’ll see.
