Hire Ben Johnson, trade for Lamar Jackson = profit

Seeing how Wilson and Watson looked for their new teams after being the centerpieces of huge trades and owners of shiny new massive contracts, I think I'm all the way out on trading for Lamar. If a team is willing to part with a franchise QB it has to be seen as a massive red flag. Granted, Watson's red flags were whipping in the wind for all to see.

Yep and two straight years with injuries and his play style I would stay far away

these are all HCs who are in the playoffs this year and are first time head coaches for their respective franchise. It’s possible I missed someone else as well.

mcVay also another head coach with no prior head coach experience. It’s just not a rubric for success anymore.

Most ppl on this list had multiple years as a OC or DC and a proven track record atleast being the number 2 guy..

Ben Johnson has 1 year and you ppl give him a guru tag …

One has to worry what happens to Ben Johnson when he stands on his own. He was surrounded with offensive minds, and Campbell factored into the play calling with the help of Brunell and Staley. The Lions play calling was done by committee (Campbell, Johnson, Brunell, and Staley) after Lynn was stripped of his play calling duties in 2021 and fired at the end of the season. If I had to go with one of those offensive minds, I choose Brunell and Staley over Johnson. Brunell if you want to develop a QB.

When Johnson leaves, I expect him to promote Engstrand to OC as his nuts and bolts communicator. It will still be play calling by committee. Engstrand will look just like Johnson after 1 season, and you will be talking about hiring him too. As long as Campbell can lean on Staley and Brunell for the run and pass game, Campbell's offense will continue to look the same as it did this season.

Yea but pretty sure they were a coordinator for more than one year.

4 of those names were never a coordinator for more than one year.  One of them was never a coordinator at the NFL level.

I am not trying to correct you, but just sharing relevant information based on your comment.

Are you assuming Jackson is tagged? I believe he's scheduled to be a FA.

There is no way the Ravens, or any team, would let their franchise QB walk in FA.  They will 100% tag him.

Cousins is the only sub-30 QB I can think of recently that has hit FA that was a franchise guy, but 1) Cousins wasn't seen as some bonafide top 10 QB like Jackson is and 2) Washington tagged him like 2 or 3 years in a row.  I guess Brady hit FA but only because he negotiated a deal where they couldn't tag him.

    • I think everyone says Mike Evans because of size, but really they have different strengths and play styles.  Tmac is better on intermediate routes and not nearly as good at contested catches.
    • At this point, it is criminal to go into the 2026 training camp/OTA's with XL penciled in as a #2 WR. The team must upgrade, either through free agency or the draft. If he cannot give 100% effort on significantly less snaps as a #4-6 WR(players like Tremayne have done that consistently) then I don't think you have a player worth rostering beyond the trade deadline. Offensively, we eventually have to upgrade to an NFL starting caliber C. It's been almost the length of time from Gross to Ikey since Kalil retired and we have below average to terrible C play. Love Mays as a BC-esque utility backup but he will never be an above average long term starting C.  The TE room is one of the worst in the NFL but it's a low usage position in this offense, so the investments are likely to be small, if any. I would never expect to see an elite TE in a Dave Canales offense. 100% agree on OL depth. We actually aren't bad there but BC will be gone, Mays is a UFA, Corbett is a UFA and Zavala has been both injured and bad. We have to bolster that depth again or resign guys like Mays and Corbett to keep that depth somewhat stable.
    • Bingo. The dude is a baller no doubt and I'd love to have him in a vacuum but like you said he's gonna fetch a haul so the only teams it really makes sense for are teams with an overall good roster who they feel an edge rusher like Crosby would out them over the top in terms of competing for SBs. I'd be looking st teams like the Pats, Bucs, Ravens, Seahawks, etc. It wouldn't be shocking to see him moved. He may be more valuable to a rebuilding team in the form of the draft assets he'd fetch than he is on the field. He should still have several more good years in the tank at 28 but by the time the Raiders can reasonably expect to rebuild he's gonna be on the decline.
