Tepper clearly wants to change the Panthers identity

Rhule was never an offensive guru of any sort. He had like 7 years of college coaching experience and he was top 50% defense like all but one year. He also had a top 25 defense like 3 or 4 times in those 7 years.

He had a top 50 college offense once…

Look at his tenure here. Never a top half of the league offense ( closest was when we fired Joe Brady and then got worse lol ) but we’ve had top half of the nfl defense a couple of his years here.

Makes sense...

Sorry don’t believe it. This is just a toy for Tepper. If he truly cared he’d hire consultants. He be more self aware. He isn’t qualified. And honestly he doesn’t care. If we do well he wants to be the reason and wants the credit. Could take ten years, could be never - that fact isn’t important to him and that’s the problem.

For folks that wanted Wilks to stay:

This is the worst our division has been in a long time and we still couldn’t win it. He had the opportunity to by beating Tampa and he said… who is the best offensive pass catcher on the Bucs? Let’s single cover him over and over. And we lost. We got outcoached.

Then, look at who we beat:

Tampa when they were 3-3.

Atlanta when they were 4-5.

Denver when they were 3-7.

Lions when they were 7-7.

New Orleans when they were 7-9.

Cmon.

The comparison is where we were to where we ended up which is clearly an improvement. Most new coaches do better their second year.  Why do people keep acting like this is Wilkes ceiling instead of his floor? Now he would get to pick his players and his staff. That should make things better not worse. You make it sound reasonable that with all the issues and struggles he inherited that he would have a winning record and beat all the good teams.

Get real.

Doing better then rhule isn’t the benchmark for getting the job

No but a real mark of a good coach and leader is when you get the exact same roster or in his case a depleted roster and make them perform at a substsntially higher level and that Wilkes did.

Because the 3-13 was years ago and the 6-6 shows where he is today. Better indication of his current ability.  And I guess not having a secondary impacted why our defense got worse.  Truth is you have to nitpick to find fault when he did a great job under the circumstances.

Well, to be fair. Nitpicking is kinda what he Huddle does. Someone posts a thought, and the rest of the Huddle nitpick it til it bleeds. Rinse and repeat.

People don’t seem to understand how limited this roster is offensively. Our QB room is bottom 2 in the league with Houston, we have absolutely zero receiving threats at tight end and we have a #1 receiver who’s really #2 guy at best. Wilks nor any other coach can make that offense look explosive. He did a great job with what he had.

Daboll and Kafka had Daniel Jones put up 3,200 yards, 15 TDs, and a 92.5 QB rating/60.7 QBR with Darius Slayton, Richie James, Isaiah Hodgins, and Daniel Bellinger as their top receiving options.

If we pick someone with no head coach experience expect to be mediocre again. The winning percentage for new first time head coaches is around  42% their first year.

This is how I feel as well.  Wilks is the right man for this point and time. Tepper will screw it up, he’s the new Snyder.

You wanted Ron to go but you are fully in favor of bringing back a coach who will have to learn the concept of going for it on 4th down and not punting over and over like Rivera did early on? You're entitled to your opinion but this place really is bizarro sometimes.

Ben Johnson to me is the NFL version of Joe Brady...let that sink in.

I mean Wilks defense was actually better than Ben Johnson offense...let that sink in.

I'm all for a new approach at offense don't get me wrong but it starts with your QB first...

Example...U can be a great coach and your QB sucks..Payton without Brees...u lose..or have a great QB and your coaching sucks but u win...ala Brady/bowles....

    • Gronk is the best TE of all time, but he also played with Brady. Clarke was great, but had Peyton and in an era TE's didn't make crazy money. Kittle is great, but the two times he's made the SB, he was still on his rookie contract for one, and the other the 49ers had Purdy on a cheap rookie deal which help them build the rest of the roster. So again, it's not about not wanting an elite TE, of course it would be nice.  But realistically, in today's NFL, unless that elite TE with a top end TE salary is on a team with a GOAT level QB and/or other serious cap savings (i.e. key players on rookie deals), then I think it's not a good use of cap space.
    • This place was the poo pre tepper with tons of hilarious posters like phillyB. Joined in the 2000s during the 07 season and have been here bitching about this team since. but yeah its sadly been dying a slow death, every time I come to this site I am surprised its still up. I think the 2015 season was the absolute peak, the Panthers and this board especially just haven't "felt" the same since then. Igo should really sell the board since he clearly doesn't care anymore. Also, Reddit blows and the Bryce defenders on there need Jesus.
    • Guessing the price is too rich here given the injury history.  2024 was brutal and production dropped off in 2025 with a few more injuries (albeit rough qb play).    Don’t really understand the narrative that Young can’t benefit from talented upgrades on offense. Especially here with respect to a tight end. Any QB will benefit from talented receivers that threaten the top of coverage and tight ends with skills to stress zone.    The age and injury history, coupled with what he’s likely asking, just probably means we can better spend that money elsewhere.
