After further reflection, if Steve Wilks gets a 3 year contract it wouldn't upset me.  He did rather well this season, especially considering what he had to work with.

With his years in the NFL, I don't doubt he could build a decent coaching staff and we already know he is a great motivator and leader of young men.  My biggest worry (with only a small sample size) is what appears to be an aversion to taking risks when the game/season is on the line.

Yes, offense is important, but NFL history has numerous examples of teams with high scoring offenses that failed to win the SB for a lack of a dominant defense.

If he gets a new contract, hopefully it will be with Reich at OC.

Since the lack of division success is a signal that Reich is better fit for a coordinator job than a head coaching position.

A Wilks (head coach)-Reich (offensive coordinator) pairing could be appealing to Tepper and a combination I would like to see joined together..

Reich isn't brilliant?

Reich is seen as one of the better offensive minds in the NFL. The Colts ranked in the top 10 in scoring in three of his first four seasons in Indianapolis. The unit also ranked in the top of the league in yardage during three of those four seasons as well.

While Reich had a turnstile at quarterback during his tenure, his offenses — until this past season — functioned at a relatively high level.

    • He has attempted 8 shootout goals in his NHL career and made 1. He is among our worst SO guys on the entire roster in terms of career stats.
    • Against Miami, the Panthers were behind by 17 in the 2nd quarter facing a 4th - 5. Young completed a 21 yard pass and they went on to score 7 on that drive. Then in the 4th, down by 4, they faced a 4th - 5 and again, he completed a 17 yard pass and they went onto score a TD for the win. He also accounted for 2 of the 3 TD's.  As I said, he got them in that mess and no doubt, Rico gets credit as well, but missing on either of those 4th down conversions hands the ball over and results in 1 or 2 less TD's giving them a loss. As you said though, that's just a small quibble. The real question is how does the FO see it?  I am guessing they see it as something to build on. I think most peope here see it as a total loss and fully expect the FO to see it that way as well. Time will tell.
    • Kochetkov is just too streaky. TBD if Freddie is doing that too. Freddie is the more reliable goalie over his career. The Bussi kid looks like he could be a solid #2 eventually.  Just need to figure out the #1 guy. Same as almost every year. It's not talent, it's consistency and being able to step up in the playoffs.
