What were they even trying to accomplish here?  Why flex the o-linemen out wide?  Nobody thinks they're going to catch a pass.  Has anybody actually said what this play was supposed to accomplish, had it been successful?

Not sure if you've gotten an answer or not but Pat Macafee Darius Butler and AQ Shipley said based on what you can see based on lining your OL out wide with a speed guy, Dak running immediately after making the throw and the initial look the 9ers gave before the time out it likely was supposed to look something like:

1) Play designed assuming the 49ers rush none and drop 11 in coverage like teams usually do 2) Hook and lateral at the point of the catch, probably with Zeke or Dak 3) a throwback to the opposite sideline where you have a speed guy and linemen forming a seal like a screen

On paper may have worked but we'll never know because the 49ers called a time out after seeing the formation and afterwards when they came out in the same formation the 49ers of course rushed zeke immediately and blew the play up.

If it is Reich I hope we actually go all-out for a QB and trade up to #1 because my fear is the ultimate combo of mediocrity: Reich + Derek Carr.

We'd be the Marvin Lewis Bengals; good enough for a playoff spot and even a division title every few years but ultimately doomed to the NFL's murky middle tier of teams not good enough to win it all but too good to ever be in position to draft that franchise-altering player. At least without getting insanely lucky in the draft.

    • I agree it is more about the OL. If you happen to have a world beater with a great OL then that’s better obviously but you don’t need to have that.  Capable and durable guys that can get to the second level with good blocking can be plenty.
    • I think Gibbs is special, but you’re right, some of the top investments have proven to not be much different than some 2nds and 3rds. Taylor for example is on an MVP level season. James Cook is doing better than Breece Hall for example. Raiders weren’t in a good spot to draft Jeanty. Same with the Falcons/Bijan.  You gotta swing at the right time — the investment shouldn’t come too early. You almost have to stumble into a guy mid to late rounds while building or find that guy to put you over the top when the team is finally well rounded.
    • Like I said in another post yesterday, the handling of the offensive line by Fitterer and mostly Morgan has been crazy. We've spent way too much money(Lewis and Hunt) to keep Bryce upright instead of using our picks in the 2nd round on JPJ and Frazier. Could have kept an injured Corbett at guard, Brady at swing, and still taken Maye as a backup, sorry Zavala. We wouldn't have taken XL, but XL hasn't been as advertised anyway, and Brooks hasn't contributed anything. Moton's extension with it's signing bonus made him uncutable. Icky's contract was due at the same time Bryce's 3rd year ended, and we all know it's extension or 5th year, and if we're going to do a 5th year, he's going to want the extension.  To me the whole thing is just ridiculous. Right now, depending on if Tepper decides to keep Bryce, it feels like we're going to have to choose between Icky and a Bryce extension. Maybe he plays on the 5th year, but I think he'll want the big money guarantee.  JMO, but if you took a look at how the contracts could potentially fall, the writing was on the wall that this could be a cash flow nightmare. Too many contract guarantees, not enough rookie contracts to offset the upcoming paydays.
