Coaching Interview Thread IV: A New Hope

The TLDR 2023 coaching cycle for us summarized....."choose your poison".

Wilks - you know what you're getting. Physical, ground and pound football with a suspect DC. Who does he bring in for OC? Turned the culture around, has the locker room and a great local story. Is it not more of what we've experienced for the past 20 years?

Reich - Teppers ideal cross of HC experience-offensive background. Very solid coaching tree and won a SB as an OC. Did he fail in Indy or was it a similar situation to Carolina's sh!t show of QB carousel and suspect ownership?

Steichen/Johnson/Moore - young up and coming OCs that have had success calling plays, though not for very long. Can they be "thee guy" running the show, gaining respect and buy-in from players...much different than a playcaller.

Payton - the most experience, winning history with a ring as a HC and brings a culture with him that players are drawn to. Cost and control is the issue. For Tepper to give up draft capital, top $$ for salary AND control from Fitts/Morgan....no dice.

Kafka/Dorsey - just not there yet. Some highs and lows....still a year or two out from HC consideration, IMO.

Bottom line is that there is no "homerun" lock HC in this cycle.

Hope for the best...be happy that Rhule is no longer here and that Payton & Harbaugh are not coming in to seize control, cost us assets and bring in veteran QBs and players, vs. building a long-term answer.

Whoever it is at HC/OC/DC/QB, I will root for. There's reasons to be happy and concerned about all candidates. There is no Tomlin or Belly out there that you can hang your hat on to bring SBs to the Queen City.

How long did it take for you to come up with that quirky response?

You get Waldo to proof read it for you?

Good analysis...

Wilks is absolutely a leader. I think even his fiercest critics would acknowledge that. My question would be whether he could produce the kind of offensive product you need to be able to compete in today's NFL.

Reich? Not The kind of fiery leader that Wilks is, but a guy with a lot better understanding of modern offense. Likely overall better connected as well. That's why he'd be my choice even though I'm a huge fan of Wilks.

And just as an aside, it's funny for me to think that I went into this search preferring older coaches but expecting younger ones, and now it appears I might actually get my wish.

Well said and why I wish we could keep both. Probably not practical, though.

For sure, but you have to take risks if you want to get to the san frans of the world plateau.   Would they crash and burn, odds are probably but what if they dont.  What if we end up with a shannahan or Mcvay?

Let me show you teppers problem with that for the first 2 seasons. At the end of the day, it is still a business.

I’ve said it many times, I think he’s being sold short.  I think he will have this team in the playoffs next season and do well in them. Not Super Bowl quality, but that is just lack of talent.  I feel Reich is too soft spoken and that won’t go well in the locker room.  I think he will be on the hot seat in 2 years tops.

So you're good with Al Holcomb running the defense?

If it’s Fitt and Reich running things you should be happy. Who are you wanting at QB? Let’s see if you can that happen too.

    • i think that in the last year or two of fox, we had started becoming complacent and just accepted losing as not a big deal. we were ok with it.  with cam (NOT because of Rivera) we started getting some of that grit back, but then after the superbowl run in '15 gettleman killed the team by gutting it. since then we never recovered. guys that could have helped us, he let go.  rivera was a nice guy. he wasn't a tough leader that brought out the best in people. the league let cam get beat up because they didn't like him rivera and our front office had no spine to stand up for him.  then rhule came and whatever fight/keep pounding spirit we had in us, he ran out of town.  you combine all that with what you were talking about, NFL becoming a finesse passing league, made the league soft. i think with the way it appears we are getting rebuilt, we will be bringing back some smashmouth. will we focus on pounding the rock a lot of the game? i sure hope so because teams aren't really built to stop that kind of thing anymore. and the more you are built like that, the further you will go in the playoffs.
    • First thing I'd have done as the new GM is pull up every Scout's report on Young. Anyone that was wrote a glowing report would immediately be fired.
