Josh McCown knows Sammy Well

To me it is interesting that Josh helped/mentored Sam as a rookie QB getting paid 10million to do so.  Is he here to further assess/help Sam as a QB coach??

Corral could be a the biggest beneficiary.  That broken foot may have been a blessing in disguise because had he been healthy and got thrown into that QB poo carousel last year--looked like crap, people would be down on him.  Being an 'unknown' is a lot better label than getting thrown to the wolves and being labeled a 'loser'.

Judging by the other thread, there’s going to be a lot of folks upset when Darnold is the starter next year. 
 

And it will be even worse when he looks like he’s progressed. Never will admit they are wrong and will continue looking for the next top 10 rookie QB bust.

I think McCown will access what we have in Corral going into the draft.  If McCown feels Corral is legit, we might go after WR in 1st to help him out instead of giving up on Corral development and going for the next hot thing.  If we draft another WR, Marshall will slide into his natural slot position he excelled in college.  Then we might try to resign Darnold to be behind Corral.  Darnold showed amazing attitude when he got bench last year.  A team player that is willing to take a back seat.

Sam's main problem is purely mental.  He's got the physical tools.  No, he's not the fastest QB--fast enough and not the strongest arm, but plenty strong. His problems are recognizing schemed coverage and letting bad plays go.  Usually they are intertwined meaning he got fooled by a coverage, throws a pick and the rest of his day heads straight downhill.

If McCown can coach him up to see clues in different coverage and build him up to where a mistake doesn't ruin his day, then Sam would be a really good #2 or bridge QB.  That said, if he is on this roster next year, I hope the sole intent is to be that bridge QB/#2.  In the long term, we do need an upgrade over a serviceable QB.

I have no problem with Sam as the backup. The number of posters that want him to be our guy going forward is  very confusing. We need to want/expect better from our franchise. Gamble on a 6th year player who still has the same issues or do like most other teams and draft one. It’s really not as complicated as people are making it.

Sam has improved greatly since he has been here.  I don't see a reason to turn our back on his development, even if we do something splashy at the position.  Sam has steadily improved, and has looked better with each stint that he has had.  Considering his development has been under 2 OC's and one interim OC, it's pretty incredible.  He's also had to deal with an awful offensive line most of the time he has been here.  He's had zero tight ends, and only one legitimate receiver to work with.  If you can get Sam some weapons, he should take the next step.  I'm not saying he is a SB winning QB or he is the long term answer, but he should prove adequate.  I think it's likely had Sam been the starter week 1, and Baker wasn't brought in, we probably were in the playoffs last year.

I've also been impressed with Sam's professionalism and likeability given the amount of criticism and scrutiny he's received during his career.  People forget the guy is only a year older the Levis.  I would like the Panthers to resign Sam,  He has improved and I don't think he's hit his ceiling yet.

But yes, Sam could benefit from it, though I don't know if it'd be to the point of his being a starter.

Is there really enough tape to determine if Corrall is legit? Nah. To much of an unknown. Another QB will be drafted even if a QB is signed in free agency. 

You are completely right about needing another WR on the outside. Marshall should be played more in the slot for the reason you mentioned. Do you have any idea how the WR class looks like? 

Heard that some aren't high on the class, claims of no real 1st but same time multiple prospects are mentioned going in the first..

DE, OG, TE classes are talked as being good/or deep. 

DE/OLB, TE are definitely needs and could be prioritized above WR, or? 2-3 round WR do not often have a big impact. Could be better to wait for next year's first..

I could see Sam coming back as that vet in the room (similar to what McCown was in NY) bridge with the 1st rd pick and Corral as the 2 young guys we’re developing to be our future in the room.

they’d have to go with his pre draft evaluation and whatever info they can get how he looked in camp.

Which won’t be enough to prevent us from taking one of these top 4 QBs if available.
