CJ Stroud's tape is a Pleaseant Surprise

Arm strength is overrated. Tom Brady is the GOAT QB and he really didn't have elite arm power.

How many elite QBs didn't have at least very good arms though? Arm strength is THE factor that gets more QB prospects overdrafted than any other individual factor but there's a reason for that.

I think CJ is the best QB prospect in this draft, but I think his biggest potential weakness is his personality.  He seems very reserved and almost aloof on the field.  Not the stereotypical vocal leader type.

He describes it here. I thought the same at first but watching more interviews and social media bts clips he has a presence/charisma that's confident and genuine. I'll take that over a "fiery" Russ or Baker etc.

This was cool but McCowns breakdown was my favorite. Hard to compete with a guy that's been breaking down film in actual NFL QB rooms for 20 years. I wish he'd gotten to Richardson and Hooker before he took the QB coach job

It's of no benefit to us to have McCown pubically expressing his views on the upcoming draft class. I get it's fun and insightful but his QB views just became the Panthers intellectual property.

Pros:

He showed improvement as the season went on and made a lot of anticipation throws that he missed early in the year. Smart and decisive and can make multiple reads (Compares him to Fields who made those kinds of reads 5 times all year at OSU, whereas Stroud did them 5 times a game. Also mentions Stroud's time to throw was significantly lower than Fields' at 2.80 compared to 3.14). Throws a pretty and accurate ball, very Russell Wilson-esque the way it drops in on a dime.

Cons:

Lacks elite Pocket presence and does not manipulate the pocket well even though he senses pressure well (Compares him to Dak Prescott and Derek Carr in that regard). This leads to him scrambling sometimes unnecessarily and making erratic throws without structure. Decision making ability takes a massive hit when he needs to ad-lib.

Conclusion:

Calls him a certified passer by Bruce Arian's definition of a QB and Jared Goff who can run, which is a high floor guy that 20+ Franchises would gladly take under a rookie deal. Not a knock on him as an evaluation at all. Says he ended up being much more impressed than he originally was after looking at the tape.

Worth a top 5 pick.

If he falls to 9...

His arm strength is very good, not elite. He can make every throw, but he can’t laser 35+ yards on a rope like Cam, Allen, Roethlesburger.  He’s got more than enough for the deep ball though.

It’s not any weaker than Burrows.

Not handling pressure well nor being able to deliver off platform throws when having to improvise are fairly damning traits for an NFL QB prospect.

If Stroud is the guy, then the hope is that the Georgia game is the type of player he is rather than can be.

    • I guess I should have stipulated outside the sacred cow.   I complained from year one that Bryce should compete for and win the starting job on his own merit but no he was just handed it. I have been right there with everyone that wants competition.  But I don’t really have a huge problem with it for this season the way it has gone because where are the viable people we don’t have to trade for? I actually am okay with tiny hands Pickett because he is so close to Bryce arm strength wise and to be honest, skill wise. Probably. And it is only a one year deal.  That also takes I to account that the QB class is looking stacked next year and if Young fails miserably then we get either a reset or a real competition and there will be more guys that I would like looking at in the FA QB class next year as well.    I sort of accept where we are this year and look at it as a treading water year. I just want to get to next year with some clarity. More than anything. And they did empty out the room. Again, who was really there for us?  And I know it would not be a true competition at this point anyway. They are giving him the year, like it or not.    Also I don’t give a poo about winning games IF he sucks and or goes down after sucking because draft position and that stacked QB class.  And I want out from under him So Bad.     So I guess it is several factors that lessen my anxiety over his backup this particular season.    I am not trying to convince anyone, but you asked.
    • What happened to King? Was he a no show?
    • think these smaller Qb's are going to have a much harder time convincing an NFL team to draft them. not saying a smaller Qb under 6 feet tall will not make an NFL roster .it will most likely be a UDFA contract more or less prove it deal.NFL teams have been burnt time & time again investing in these small NFL Qbs & i think  teams are now finally starting to realize that investing in these smaller Qb's under 6 feet tall is simply a bad idea  ...just saying
