Stafford/Carr Comparison

After doing some comparisons since half the board compares him to Darnold and the other half compares him to Stafford. I put together their first 9 seasons in the NFL. There numbers are very similar.

Now I know the Anti-Carr crowd will say "well Carr had Devante Adams and Josh Jacobs" here are a few notable people that Stafford had over that timespan: Calvin Johnson, Maurice Morris, Reggie Bush, Nate Burleson, Eric Ebron, Lance Moore, Anquan Boldin, Marvin Jones, Kenny Golladay, TJ Lang, Graham Glasgow, Laken Tomlinson, Riley Reiff, Larry Warford, and Rob Sims.

The comparisons between him and his brother, Sam Darnold, and Baker are quite asinine.

Good data. I wouldn’t have guessed he was statistically better than Stafford, especially considering he’s had worse weapons by a fair margin over the course of those 9 years. Coaching I’d say is about equally bad.

Carr is underrated by a large portion of this board and I wouldn't object dependent on his price (as if they'd ask me lol).  But I just feel for our staff we've built it makes more sense to grab a rookie this year, a vet 2 year bridge guy, and build the rest of the roster.

Carr would immediately make us better and imo the favorites for the division but I'd rather have the flexibility of a drafted QBs contract while our new staff builds the roster.

Someone from this division will probably land Carr and they'll have a two year advantage over the rest of the division, even if another team hits on a good QB in the draft.

He's not going to be cheap, though. So is that $35 million a year (and probably more) right now in our cap situation a good investment for a quick run at the division and the playoffs or could the money be spent better?

I know what I think, but I wish I knew for sure how it would shake out. He could have a great eight years ahead of him and mesh beautifully with our WR corps and thrive behind our improved offensive line. 

But I'd said the same thing in hopefulness about Baker Mayfield, too. And that ended up being just tragic and painful to watch. Woof.

Why not have both?

Remember, Bridgewater and Darnold were both receiving 20 mil/year. 

So, is 30-35 mil/year for a significant upgrade at QB too much to pay?  Keep in mind that the salary cap is increasing by 16 million for 2023.  Carr would be the best QB in the division and the Panthers would become the odds on favorite to win the NFC South.

None of this would prevent the Panthers from drafting their QB of the future this year or next.

Wouldn't it be enjoyable to watch the Panthers get back to playing competitive football in 2023?

I think the difference between Carr and the other retreads we have tried is that Carr actually has shown a level of consistency over time that none of the others have.  He's also shown growth and improvement over his career.

Kind of ironic I think that his Pro Bowl years weren't under the guy hosting the NFL rookie QB camp show on ESPN being heralded as a QB whisperer.

If Reich and co think Carr is the answer, I’ll get behind it. I prefer a rookie with our young team, but either way.

I would like to know why I should invest all that money into Carr and not just pay Gardner Minshew less and roll with him. Why is Minshew's career passer rating actually higher than Carr's?

Teddy B career is 90.5. Cam's is 85.2. Would you rather have Cam or T2G?
