Draft Profile: Chandler Zavala, G, N.C. State

The 2023 NFL offseason is here and that means it’s time for mock drafts, draft profiles and everything that goes with them. So without further ado, here’s one of many Draft Profiles for the 2023 NFL draft.

Chandler Zavala, G, N.C. State

HT: 6’5
WT: 325 lbs

Accolades:

– All-America Honors 2018
– First-team All-MEC

Video:

Pros:

– Has the natural power to move defenders at the point of attack. Zavala also has the agility and speed to get out in front and land blocks at the second level. He also shows a good understanding of angles when climbing to the second level.
– Displays good awareness when it comes to reading moving bodies, effectively reacting and adjusting. He also shows a good feel for combo blocks.
– Zavala plays with good leverage despite his taller frame, and he’s a surprisingly good mover for his size, showing fluidity and flexibility when blocking on the second level.
– He’s a coordinated athlete who can win at the point of attack in the run game, and Zavala can also move to consistently land blocks at the second level.
– Consistently keeps his feet sliding while maintaining power when dealing with speed, often sending speed rushers flying past the pocket
– In the run game, he explodes off the line of scrimmage and consistently gets out to the second level to do damage.

Cons:

– Has enough power in the run game, but at times Zavala seems to lack a mean streak.
– Can struggle to stay engaged, especially on the second level. His hand placement can be sloppy, costing him power.
– Could be a liability against speed-to-power pass rushers early in his career.

Summary:

Zavala will add instant quality depth to most rosters. His size and strength translates well to the pros. If Zavala can improve against the speed rush he can definitely be a starter in this league.

Agreed. Should be drafting OL every year. The only position other than QB that effects literally every offensive snap.

I was curious so i took a quick look back...

This is Fitterer's third draft. In both of the previous ones, we took two offensive linemen

    • Bryce isn't a risk-taking gunslinger.  That's just QB DNA.  No one has ever said that is what we were drafting when we went that route.  That's my point.  That's not Bryce. Can you make Alex Smith throw deep? Sure.  He will occasionally.  In the reverse, can you ask Brett Favre to just take the easy layups? Sure.  He can in moments.  But in the end, they are what they are.  as I have said, Canales probably could win more games with PJ Walker.  And Bryce is a better overall QB than PJ.  PJ Walker would also have much worse games mixed in that Bryce would.
    • From what i see, Canales offense requires a QB that is willing to take chances to maximize the offense. XL is also the kind of receiver that needs a qb to be risky to bring out his full potential. Its just a matter of if Bryce is gonna be that QB.
    • Baker just played how Baker played.... everywhere but here. He is a risk taking gunslinger.  Always has been.  And last year was asked to be what he was.   Geno Smith was the best deep ball passer in the NFL his comeback season.  Wasn't even close that year.  Again, that's the type passer Canales has always been around in the offenses he has been part of.  The pass game that compliments the stubborn run is the deep chunk play pass game.   And that was his first investment with XL.  My continued point, is the same as going into last season.  It's a bad marriage going in.  The QB doesn't fit the scheme.  Again.  Carrol/Fox/Ron....all paired up their boring football with risk taking QBs.  And again, I'm fine if that is where we are going.  It's not my preference but that's not my argument.  I'm saying if we are doing that, we need a QB that matches it.
