Predicting Bryce Young's rookie year

Yeah that was with an awful HC.

You're right, the situations are different.   But lets not pretend our HC and OC don't have any notable flaws.  I hope things click out of the gate for Young, Brown and Riech, but realistically there's going to be stumbles their first year together.

Shouldn’t be anywhere near Meyer level, but I understand the point you are making.

He better not, that was the main selling point on him, that his processing and mental side of the game were next level and more ready than any other QB in recent memory from that standpoint.

His negatives were his size and durability (nothing to do there but not get hurt) and that he doesn't have any truly elite physical traits (i.e. arm strength, speed, etc).  Those are things that can just tank him as a QB if he can't prove them wrong, but the whole thing with him is that his mental side of the game was supposed to be so good, that those things shouldn't be issues for him.

Sure, some early mistakes, but that better not be where he struggles or it will be concerning as that's what he's supposed to be so good at figuring out and overcoming.  I'll take it the first half of the season, but if that's an issue late in the year, that's scary.

Yup.  Bill O'Brien said the 2 smartest players he ever coached were Bryce Young and Tom Brady.  Ill take that all day.  BY may not have a cannon for an arm, but its not a bad arm at all, and hes super accurate.

Exactly, and I was originally commenting on someone saying they expect a bunch of INTs as a rookie due to the defense baiting him into making mistakes.

The baiting him into mistakes part of it is where I'd have an issue if it happens throughout his whole rookie year, not that he'll make mistakes, but that the defense will bait him into it.

Again, early on in the season, a few times, sure it's bound to happen, but based on what we were told about him having this next level brain never seen before in a prospect at this stage of their career, he should recognize and fix that very quickly.  He could make other mistakes, such as holding the ball too long trying to make plays or getting rid of it took quickly to avoid hits.

Or just under/over estimate his WRs abilities to make certain plays that lead to WRs, those things I 100% fully expect to see happen all year as a rookie.

But not getting "baited by the defense" as that's what we were sold on with him, that he's a generational mind.

Two things always stood out about him the most to me in the pre-draft talk.  The first being that Bryce taught O'Brien the Alabama offense when he was hired, that's not in any way normal to have the QB do that instead of the other coaches.  The other was that they would regularly give him 2 plays in the huddle and then he would make the play call at the line, again, not normal in college, that's why you always see the whole team looking at the sideline to get the final play choice before the ball is snapped.

They also said that he would show up Monday mornings, not only having already fully digested that week's gameplay, but with notes and suggestions of changes to be made.  From all accounts, that also is not normal for a college QB to have already done by Monday mornings.

I was never on the Young train pre-draft, but the only reason I was accepting of him being the pick in the end was because of this football mind we were sold on.  If he wasn't this generational football mind, he wouldn't have been the draft pick, it would have been Stroud or AR.  That's why it would be concerning to me if defenses were able to fool him all year long into stupid mistakes.

He's usually good for a 10 yard scramble or so per game, I think he'll have 100-200 for the season.

we counting sacks? I was and expecting a higher  number of sacks as he translates to NFL speed

    • I know it's only been training camp and one preseason game, but I think T-Mac has already shown his floor to be exactly what I said about him in the pre-draft process. That his floor if he never improves his game, is as one of the best #2 WRs in the NFL, if not even still a low end #1 (i.e. a 25th-ish best WR in the league). I think it's safe to say he's already established himself as our #1, and there are only a small handful of teams in the league where I don't think he'd be their starting #2 WR in Week 1. Bengals (Higgins), Dolphins (Waddle), Eagles (Smith), Bucs (Godwin if healthy), Rams (Adams) are really the only teams where I think he'd be the #3 as a rookie in Week 1.  A few others like the Lions (Williams), Bears (Odunze), Seahawks (Kupp), Commanders (Deebo), where he'd be the 2b to start the season, just because they're vets and/or already have a year or two of experience with their team/QB. And even having said that, I think by year 2, he's better than every one of those players (And no, I'm not saying he's already going to be better than a prime version of Adams, just whatever he'll be at 33 next year), and same goes for Kupp, but that's more because it seems like his body might be quitting on him in a way that hasn't happened to Adams (yet).
    • Well to be fair, Horn not practicing right now to let his stitches heal up from a car accident isn't something that should be concerning.  Sure, you don't want him missing practice leading into the season, but it's one that once healed, won't have lingering affects or fear of re-injuring it, it was just bad luck.
    • Quality backups are absolutely important. This franchise has been plagued with depth problems. That said, there is a little bit of dismay that Mays can't beat out a 1-legged man, and all the talk going into the off-season was how BC would certainly be gone since he had position versatility.  In the end, it doesn't matter too awfully much, as I would be shocked to no end if Corbett makes it through the season. We know what we have in reserve, and that should surely be better than trying to sign random fat guys mid season to try and take over.
