Grant Gordon of NFL.com says O-line IS a thing in so many words

I've never heard of Grant Young before tonight, but NFL.com's Digital Content Editor has apparently seen enough to know that our O-line problems are more serious than some seem to realize, and that they aren't going to magically fix themselves. From a summary:

"O-line officially an issue for Panthers. Unfortunately for Carolina, the Week 1 performance by the offensive line wasn't an aberration. Bryce Young was harassed throughout his two drives, shining a glaring spotlight on a major problem for the Panthers going forward. With the maturation of the future of the franchise live and televised, protecting Young is paramount. So far, though, he's been hounded and pummeled. On Friday, Young was pressured 42.9% of the time, per Next Gen Stats, and sacked once. Over two games and five series, Young has been hit too often, sacked twice and quarterbacked Carolina to only three points. When the games count in the standing a few weeks from now, Young's going to play a lot more than a few series per game and that portends to even more punishment. The Panthers have an obvious issue to address – in a hurry."

 

I appreciate him getting right to it. No misguided "vanilla" talk. No holding-cards-close-to-the-vest talk. No 5-D-chess foolishness. No fuging chaser! Just straight!

If we don't don't address the O-line leakiness, 2023 has the potential for a very very ugly season.

"Once again he showed his toughness, standing strong against the rush. He appeared largely unrattled and flexed his impressive arm, able to show his strength and accuracy on the run or even with his feet planted and unable to to step into a throw."

 

Just like last week, writers are trying their best to give Bryce Young what little praise they can muster, but just like last week, as I and others have said, the team's success, begins and ends with the O-line. We will not be able to really experience the Bryce Effect until he has adequate time to work his magic (and doesn't get "pummeled" before he can get into his bag).

 

"It remains arduous, however, to deliver any kind of truly accurate assessment of the 22-year-old QB, as the first two games have been an indictment of his offensive line more than anything else."

While I'm pretty much on board with not making any judgments until the season starts, since schematic issues and miscommunication can be adjusted for, on 1v1 efforts it's a bit concerning to see the oline falter, especially Ekwonu.

I remember someone saying that a large reason for the o-lines success last year was due to a huge emphasis on the run. By allowing the o-line to use their strength and big bodies, they were able to be successful when they did not have to pass protect as much.

But when it comes to making athletic plays, the o-lines lack of such is evident when opponents use stunts and athletic maneuvering around them.

Now, part of that can be made up for with proper schematic placement and organization within the o-line. They need to be on the same page. Today's preseason showed a lot of miscommunication and mental errors, especially from Icky.

Hopefully it's just preseason jitters and not a continuing trend. I'm still firmly of the belief the staff will adjust and compensate for the team's weaknesses come regular season. There's too much experience not to.

Otherwise, a lot of questions will need to be answered for.

The even more pressing concern I have about the OL is that a ton of the big hits have come from the left side, where we were under the impression that Ickey and BC were the guys we could depend on and a strength going into the season.  The other place the pressure has been coming from mostly was expected from the interior with Corbett being out and whoever ends up playing RG getting acclimated...  but man, Ickey has looked fuging horrible, and schematically the only things I could see us doing is running more and getting the ball out much, much quicker, but according to the stats last week, Bryce wasn't even getting a full 3 seconds before getting pressured last week, so there's that.  Again, it's preseason, but this poo looks bad.

Well, we got a rookie QB.

and we are protecting his blindside with a 2nd year player in a brand new O.  Who didn’t do a tremendous amount of pass pro his rookie year in the gun I don’t think.  

It’s basically a recipe for Bryce Young to have a bad time.    While he might be ahead of the curve for a rookie he is still a rookie seeing everything for the first time.

Not gonna lie, I'm concerned about Ekwonu. Guys are just blowing right by him untouched.

Ickey is definitely over thinking everything right now. Campen or somebody has to sit him down and get him to relax and to get back to the level he was playing at the latter portion of last season. I'd think getting reps against Burns every day would help against the speed rush but yeah, I hope whatever he has going on gets worked out by week 1. I believe Ickey can still be a dominant tackle, he just has to get out of his own head.

      Yeah he's the reason we weren't up by td's at that point lol, DC having to get creative just to get into field goal range and then immediately trusted his rookie kicker. to kick a 48 yarder in the wind rather then let Bryce try and complete a couple 5 yard play action passes to get in better position when Green Bay had their whole fuging team in the box to stop Dowdle lol. Twice in a row. If it was already under 40 I'd get just running to set up the hashes but jeez..

      JMO, I think it is lame as hell to publicly give up on the team and then crawl back when they win a few games. Like, how can you run a PANTHERS PODCAST and then give up on it during the season? Yes, you can argue the Panthers prior to Week 3 hadn't done anything to deserve fanfare, but nobody made them run a Panthers Podcast.  They chose to.  So stick with it.  Instead they gave up and did so publicly.  Which is well within their right - but you can't then turn around and bring it back the same season.

      The crazy thing about football is it’s a team sport. But one position can make or break the game. And one of the best ways in doing that is by not giving the ball away and being able to run at 4-5 yard clips. Throw in a couple passes and next thing you know you’re in the red zone. Playing this way limits possessions to other(more dynamic) QBs too. And if your defense plays well that could equate to between 4 and six series. If you’re running that efficient, you can say, split the offensive production with the run or the pass. So by attempt byce accounted for his half of the yardage and Rico did too. Rico also managed to punch it in at the goal line. And you gotta give it to our oline and they’re running blocking and that’s without TMO! so the truth is, Canales and management figured out how to use Bryce’s strengths to compliment this run game to cover up his weaknesses in a way that is efficient. And our defense showed improvement against pretty formidable opponent the week after andy dalton gave it to buffalo. They are putting winning football on the field more often, and we are slowly becoming better each week. I hope they can keep it up.
