Big fan of Burns but...

Bosa isn’t a comparable player.  And neither should his contract.

Burns is comparable with pass rushing specialist. And that market has already been set by the pass rushing specialist

Chubb is getting 22m a year and Burns is gonna get more than that. He's gonna be closer to Garret and Bosa than to Chubb. No other way about it.

I stated stats earlier to support paying burns. Even if you use last season. Highsmith had more sacks and ff but burns had more qb pressures, more qb hurries,  the same amount of tackles, and more tfl.

Burns was top ten in sacks, tackles, tackles for loss, top 5 in qb hurries and qb pressures last season among edge defenders.

And Highsmith had more sacks, same number of tackles, two less hurries and pressures. So he was right there or above in all those areas. And was a far superior run defender and created turnovers instead of coming close. If that’s your argument for 10M more a year…try harder.

Burns had 53 qb pressures compared to Highsmith with 32. 20 less. 😂😂😂😂

The trade was for 24 and 25 first rounders. That means we would have zero pass rush until those replacements are drafted and have a season or two under their belt. That’s a long time to wait for that payoff.

Picks always look great until the picks turn into players.

Not if you have a competent FO. If we did lord knows we should be able to replace Burns’ production with two firsts and a second. Also if your pass rush turns to zero after one player goes down…well again…the issue is the competency of the FO.

Reddick is making 15m/year and just had 16 sacks. He is also mainly just a rusher. I know we didn’t have the deal for Burns at the time but it is what it is. Im just comparing production. Wish we held onto him.

I don’t mind resigning Burns but he isn’t a complete DE and even supporters of a new deal should be concerned with just how much he appears to be wanting. Especially considering for years now teams have ran the ball on the Panthers with ease, ranking below average (for years) in rushing yards allowed.

Again, I’m not completely against a new contract. We need Burns…albeit a little too much.

But at the same time I wouldn’t have been made for them to make that trade. The Panthers would’ve won that deal.

Some seem to be on either side of the fence but you can see it both ways. Which way ultimately would’ve been better is yet to be seen.

And he whiffed miserably on most of those.  Elite players turn QB pressures into sacks.  Burns doesn’t do that.  The fact that his QB pressures are so high and career sacks so low compared to the elite pass rushers is because Burns cannot finish plays.  Bottom line.

That was also a deal signed 2 off season's ago though and that's why so many of us are yelling to just give Burns what he wants.

It may be an overpay right now, but in 2 years when 10 more players have signed deals for more than him, it will then be a bargain.

Once we turned down 2 firsts, we lost all leverage and made it so we HAD to re-sign him, just get it done.

What’s the source? Every site has completely different numbers and criteria. PFR has 30-28. PFF has Highsmith with 55. Hear an article from December saying he was only behind Garrett. So which is valid?

Alex Highsmith

Pittsburgh Steelers · Year 3
  • OVERALL SCORE: 92

While T.J. Watt’s pectoral injury had an overall negative impact for the Steelers, his absence did allow Highsmith to emerge as an elite pass rusher. Highsmith has played a career-high 86 percent of the Steelers’ defensive snaps this season, and the greater opportunity has led to a bigger impact on the field. Highsmith has racked up 49 QB this season, trailing only Myles Garrett’s 52 among players at all positions. Highsmith has twice as many sacks (10) as any other Steelers player, as he stepped into a leading role with Watt sidelined for seven games. The Steelers are 4-1 in games that both Watt and Highsmith have played in, and they will need to continue that pace if they are going to make up ground in the playoff race.

I'll try to find it again later this evening after my nap. I just got out of the hospital Sunday morning at 4am. I'm a bit tired and all I did was drive to the gas station and the grocery store for pickup. 😂

If this contract thing becomes an issue and he continues to hold out, is there still a trade market for him for a "win now" team that may be willing to give multiple first round picks?

Next year's draft is loaded with talent.  We're hopefully set at the QB position with Bryce, but the feeding frenzy on QBs will ensure there will be plenty of impact players in the top 15 on Defense including:

  • Edge/DL: Jared Verse, Chop Robinson, Di Jerzhan Newton, Leonard Taylor III, Laiatu Latu.
  • CB:  Kool-Aid McKinstry, Kalen King, Cooper DeJean

Not to mention, on the offensive side of the ball:

  • WRs:  Marvin Harrison Jr.  (assuming he's healthy"), Malik Nabers
  • TE:  Brock Bowers (he'll be what Kyle Pitts was supposed to be)

To be clear, I want Burns back, but we have to do what's right for the franchise.  If this year isn't about winning, then getting some draft picks back at a cheaper contract may make sense.  What do you think?

Unfortunately we blew our chance when the rams were panic buying last year struggling off their super bowl win last year. We will never see anything close to the same return that they offered.

We might see a 1st + a low round pick (maybe 5th) for him, but nothing better. I'm an FSU fan and love burns, but we absolutely poo the bed not accepting that trade

I'm starting to believe he is just not that guy. Say what you want about Hurney, but he kept our stars signed and very rarely would something like this occur.

I'm sure we're gonna get called kids, children, etc., by those who are emotionally attached to Fitterer and excessive use of emojis, but it has to be said.

He's the next casualty on this ship.
