What has Scott Fitterer done right?

Scott Fitterer says they’re building to the moment on the roster where they can just “drop in a quarterback” and be ready to takeoff.

He talked about that all offseason. This team isn’t rebuilding. They’ve made that clear.

Not sure how many teams in rebuild mode are missing their next years 1st rounder

Tepper himself has said those are the type decisions he will be involved in as the owner.  He isn't going to get involved in who the backup nickel corner is but will the franchise QB.

and reports/rumors was their was a disagreement about QB.  Staff liked Stroud (who was also discussed to fit the Reich mold the most).  Tepper liked Young.

Just an opinion but...it didn't really matter who liked who. The experts, for the most part, believed their weren't any franchise QBs in the 2023 draft. Tepper has been trying to find the magic QB since 2020 -- Bridgewater, then Darnold, then Mayfield, now Young. He has continually forced the issue instead of just being patient. Go 2-15, keep the draft picks and build a solid team over several drafts.

Young, Stroud, Richardson -- none will be elite.

Because by waiting on the qb, we could have kept DJ AND drafted a skill player too. Pick up the qb in '24 and we are in pretty good shape.

This argument never makes sense to me. How do you know we’d be able to pick up a qb in ‘24?

From the pre-draft process article about Young...

Old free agents didn't seem to be the vibe. Not after the Panthers and Reich had spent most of the last five years cycling through rentals. The obvious call was to draft one, but picking ninth, there's no guarantee. And while there were some good ones who might be available in 2024 in UNC's Maye and Southern Cal's Caleb Williams, that seemed a little far down the road.

Because as good as Young was, the Bears ended up with the first pick despite having a decent young quarterback in Justin Fields. Their pick might be available. Waiting until next year would be more of a roll of the dice.

So the Panthers turned their thoughts to the now, and how to make now work.

"We've not won a bunch of games in the last few years," Reich said. "So how many years can you go? Can you keep putting off this thing to take your shot and get your guy? And part of the calculus is, do we have enough capital to be patient for another year? And then naturally, as a coach, you know, you're always optimistic. I mean, we're at nine right now. I'm sure I'm not planning on being lower than that next year.

"I mean, everybody knows, you always have to be playing that game. You're not just in this draft; you have to be looking out a year or two. But you also have to factor in how full is the gas tank. Or do we need to fill up right now?"

"The fact was, we felt so strongly about the quarterback this year, right?" Fitterer said. "Like, even in our February meetings, where every scout had the same opinion on this guy. It never really changed. It just kind of held strong that way, right? That reinforced that we're doing the right thing."

Fitterer and the scouts thought a certain way in January. A new staff of coaches rolls in in February, and they initially think the same thing. The more they learned, the more sure they became.

They had conviction.

"Like, even in our February meetings, where every scout had the same opinion on this guy."

Are these the same scouts who have been evaluating talent for the Panthers for the past 25 years?

What the hell is this. What “experts” claimed that

Then we need to fire everyone and hire competent people.  Because this is a rebuild.  And if they think this is how you win now….we got big trouble.

Well I don’t think Scott Fitterer is a competent GM so I believe we’re in trouble

I also don’t think our “cap guru” is much of a guru of anything

Of course its on Fitt since he traded up for MC a round earlier.  How the fug do you A)misevaluate that badly and B)not pick him when he falls to you when your whole mantra is "keep throwing darts"?

going into the 2022 a qb was needed badly, everyone knew this so I imagine the qbs were scouted with even more diligence but yet you land on Corral who you say you had a first round grade on him.  Yeah man that falls squarely on fitt.

How do you blame Fitt solely for not drafting Howell when he was pick # 144, a fifth round pick? You seem to give a pass to the other quarterback needy teams who passed on him for 4 rounds. We don’t even know which of these young guys will prove to be the answer for the team yet. Somehow after one game you give up on our current quarterback. Makes no sense.

I blame fitt because he and his staff supposedly had a 1rst round grade on MC and God knows what on Howell and traded up and then cut a year later.  One of those qbs is out of the league and the other is 2-0.  Thats an issue.  And it doesnt matter what other teams did its what we did.  Not sure why that even matters.

If he cannot be judged by that situation then whats the point even?  Seems stupid to give him a pass on it.  Howell has looked like a nfl starter and Corral is God knows where at the moment.  At some point you have to take accountability for your choices.  How did your staff rank him so high and yet his career is effectively over.  Thats the problem

And where in any of my posts am I giving up on Bryce?

and in the meantime, you waste a lot of cap that can actually be used once you do find the QB.

The QB is the hard part of the equation, the rest of the roster you can fill out with a lot more certainty through free agency.

You see this all the time; teams try to protect young QBs and try try win early by building good defenses and running the ball.

If you don't have a QB that should be your main goal.  Winning a few extra games is pointless, there are no trophies for going 7-10 instead of 5-12.

Build a quality O-line and a good receiving core.  That way you properly evaluate your QB, also he is in the best position to develop.  Its better to go 5-12 losing games 24-31, then to win a few more games losing 14-21.  Outside of that don't waste your cap space or future picks just making yourself a little less bad.  Even if you draft a really good QB they usually struggle their first year.  Once you are sure he is going to be good and has developed some then start spending those resources to improve the defense.

I'm not normally a fan of spending resources on a RB, but I would have understood keeping him to help Bryce develop.  A player like DJ would have been nice.  Instead, we keep Burns, don't get me wrong, I think Burns can be a really good player, but i just don't know if we made the most logical choices this offseason for our long term wellbeing.

    • My father played Defensive End at Ohio State so naturally my kid is a huge Ohio State fan to go along with his being a huge Gamecock fan due to my ties to the school but last year he swore up and down we needed to draft Stroud number 1. I don't know if it was just being an Ohio State homer or what but he kept watching video after video of highlights and said Stroud was the future for us.  This past season he now claims we should have taken Rattler with one of our later round pics due to him saying he will be one of the huge steals of the draft and will be NFL ready within one season if it takes that. He said if Bryce busts completely we would have a future top QB to turn the team over to with Rattler taken in the fifth. From his prediction last year I'm starting to believe maybe they should hire him as a consultant for a few bucks a week. Hell, he is 13. They could pay him $50 a week for consulting and he would would think he is rich!
    • Yeah we know he is short blah blah blah. I don't have a ton of faith in Young to be the guy or the future but damn that joke is older than the why the chicken crossed the road.
