Do you watch CJ Stroud and wonder ‘what if’?

Then he would be the exception. Since QBs like him succeeding in the NFL is extremely rare.

Now that's a true statement. I wouldn't disagree. That's why I thought Stroud was the pick before the draft. I thought Bryce was too much of a gamble for the #1 pick. But there's no way we can judge his ability based on this crap show.

I always distinguish between college and pro. There's been plenty of good UNC players that I've been pretty meh on if not completely out on as pro prospects. Not every good college player translates. Hell, most don't.

You have the eye for it and take a lot of crap from other posters for saying it. This QB draft cycle was like listening to old baseball people talk about fat girfriends and stuff. The best QB had more people talking about his freaking schools' QB history vs his actual transition into the NFL.

Honestly, it sucks to see, yeah.  He's so good and we missed out on him.

But what is done is done.  I'll end up ruining my enjoyment for football if I keep thinking about it.  All we can do is hope the team gets better going forward.  Colossal mistakes such as the one we seem to have made can be overcome (and I say this as someone who still has 100% faith in Bryce - but Stroud is looking like a special talent and I can't deny that).  But it starts with lucking into a good GM and HC.  So right now I just hope we can do that.

He's not doing it here if we took him, though. That helps me.

Just gonna root for the best for Bryce.

I agree it is hard to judge. But it would mean the Panthers actually got the exception and when has that ever happened?

Yeah it's looking like very good is a pipe dream for him in the NFL. Serviceable is a conversation worth having and that looks like his ceiling and that takes ton of roster changes to even hit that.

He will be a bust for what they spent on him and what they missed out on by picking him but even busts can go on to be serviceable and that is what this entire situation looks like.

Sounds like Alex Smith

How can anyone know this?

I think CJ Stroud would look better than Bryce Young does here (and I want to emphasize that - Stroud would look better in Carolina than Bryce does in Carolina).  But I doubt he would look as good as he does in Houston.  Maybe "look" isn't the right word... he wouldn't produce here at the level he is in Houston.  This isn't a slight against Stroud, he's playing at an MVP level, but even the best QBs need help (look at how Mahomes' numbers have dropped off this year vs previous years, and look at his downfield numbers with Hill and after Hill).  I think even the best QBs would see their numbers drop-off here.  The receiving talent and scheme is just that bad, it is probably the slowest group of receivers in the NFL.  You combine that with a QB who can't overcome that, you have the worst offense in the NFL (well, outside of the Giants).  With Stroud, maybe we are the 20th best offense at best.  Still not as good as the Houston offense is.

But CJ Stroud would still look better than Bryce, that I agree with.  CJ is looking like a special player.

Yeah it sucks. Stroud was who I wanted right off the bat... but I will say I was swayed by the billions of fluff pieces around Bryce. Now, I do think Bryce is talented and when the pantry gets stocked with Name Brands instead of Family Dollar ish, I think he will be pretty good. To his credit tho, this man has taken a BEATING this year

Alex Smith - -. He had more arm and legs but pretty much. Same deal, drafted too high and had to go elsewhere because there was too much egg on too many faces to make what could work a thing.

Edit: was wrong. They made it work there like the Cheifs.

Alex Smith only got traded because of Kaepernick.  49ers would have definitely kept him otherwise.  He was playing so good in 2012 before his injury, then Kaep played so good they just kept riding with him.

Watching him cook in Cincy and my mind ruminates on all the what if scenarios.

The Young miss would have been like we drafted Gabbert over Newton

Besides the fact that NO TEAM would have taken Gabby over Cam, he wasn't even a lottery type QB other than the Jags reaching for him cause they needed a QB like the Steelers reaching for Pickett in the 1st round when he should have been taken in the 3rd round with the rest of that draft class. Every team that needed a QB would have taken Bryce first overall including the Texans which they publicly admitted. So please DO NOT put Bryce into the bust group where Gabby belongs just cause he has no playmakers to work with while under constant pressure on passing downs. We need playmakers otherwise any QB will struggle here including CJ and that is a FACT!

First off, no. Totally different situations. CJ would be bad here too. I think even Mahomes would be. Second, please stop with all the new threads.

You are correct. I got that wrong. I completely forgot his year with Harbaugh. That and Kaepernick only played in 3 games his entire rookie year.
