Some actual good news

With all of our cuts, trades and losses in FA, we should easily have the #1 pick in the 2025 draft. That gives us an entire year to scout for the 2025 draft.

JK, we suck and I don't see a turnaround anytime soon. I dont remember my interest in this team being this low.

The 2025 draft doesn't look like a winner as far as quarterbacks. That's where most of the value of the number one overall pick comes from.

However, I don't think the Panthers will make a massive jump, if any, going into 2026 draft. So, if you're a young Panthers fan, then maybe you can be excited for the next few seasons to be old-Jaguars esq where the team is picking top 10, usually top 5, for the next decade.

As depressing as the value is we got back from losing some of our best players, I think our front office finally realizes we are minimum 3 years away from being an average or better team. Many of these players would be in their 30s by the time we are relevant

Now it's a matter of seeing if our front office is going to give Bryce a better o-line/weapons or if they have given up on him and will let him be tank Commander to our next QB in 2025.

Anyways, everyone should enjoy being able to take next year off from watching the Panthers and tuning in for the 2025 draft

As badly as I want to replace Bryce ASAP, a small part of me wouldn't be upset if we end up with the #1 pick in a not spectacular QB draft and do what the Bears did to us, to another team.

Trade the #1 pick for a massive haul to fill our many many holes and then look to replace the QB the following year.

No, we may not luck into the #1 pick in a good draft like the Bears did, but that's not the only way to get a QB.  If we can trade the #1 pick for essentially 4 or 5 starters like the Bears did and then still end up with a Top 10 pick the next draft because Bryce is terrible, we can draft a replacement who is coming into a more fully built out team to maximize a rookie QB contract window.

Personally, I don't think Shadeur is going to be a great NFL QB and think he'll be a bust, but his star power could get a team to WAY overpay for the #1 pick if he's really the only top option out there.

No, this trade is still a move that tells me they think we're closer to competing than any fan does.

If they really felt we were a minimum of 3 years away, they'd have traded him for future assets instead of a 2nd in this year's draft.

I'm sure a contending team would have given a 2025 1st for him, or possibly even a 2025 2nd and a 2026 1st.

If we made that trade today, I'd have been very pleased, I know we need the players now, but taking higher picks further down the line would have made more sense if they really felt we were 3 years away from being even above average.

I understand your thoughts about a 2025 first. I might have preferred that but I will say that you shouldn’t forget that this is a loaded draft. A late first in 2025 might actually not be as good a player as pick 39. That said, it would have been nice to have extra picks (like the Rams first) and our #1 overall.

    • I agree. I’d make the move because I don’t see us sniffing the playoffs and let’s be honest TMac, Legette and Coker better be our top 3 future. If they aren’t and we need Thielen to replace one of them, then we need to draft yet another 1st round WR, SMH. Suffice it to say, Thielen isn’t good enough to get us into the playoffs so let’s get the young guys starting so we know if they aren’t good enough. We still have so many assumptions about whether players are who we need them to be that holding onto Thielen for 3-7 wins isn’t worth passing on a mid round pick (3rd to 5th/swaps). We’ve had some success with later round picks/UDFAs and need depth.
    • If you move Thielen I think you almost have to keep Renfrow. You need some sort of veteran presence in the locker room and Renfrow would be good insurance in the slot. I'm sure we have Coker penciled in to start there but you also have to be keeping Coker in the back of your head as XL insurance on the outside if he doesn't step up. If he flounders again, I wouldn't wait too awfully long to replace him with Coker outside and slide Renfrow into the slot and keep it moving.
    • Playing the same role is different than having the same style.  Cam Newton and Drew Brees both played QB but arent the same type in any way.
