The Panthers keep making the same mistakes under new GM.

I still cannot figure out what kind of team the Panthers are trying to build, and frankly I wouldn’t be surprised if they didn’t either. 

But one thing is clear - regardless of who is in charge, the Panthers will continue to bypass drafting starting caliber centers in favor of project WRs. After rightfully cutting the struggling Bradley Bozeman, center was a glaring need coming into the draft. The team claims to be converting former guard Austin Corbett to center, who is coming off two consecutive season ending knee injuries. Corbett has experience at center, and in Madden Franchise Mode this would be a move that makes sense. But going into a critical season for the development of second year QB Bryce Young, drafting a center to grow with seemed like the prudent decision. 

The selection of WR in Xavier Legette over Center prospects Jackson Powers-Johnson and Zack Frazier, means 4th year receiver Terrace Marshall Jr is likely on borrowed time and will be labeled another Panthers WR draft bust. It also signals that second year WR Jonathan Mingo could be heading that direction as well. Both receivers were drafted in favor of starting caliber centers in their respective drafts.

In 2021, Terrace Marshall was selected instead of Creed Humphrey (starting C for the Chiefs) and Josh Myers (starting C for the Packers), who were selected 3 and 4 picks after the Panthers picked Marshall.

In 2023, the Panthers picked Mingo ahead of Joe Tippman (starting C for the Jets), and John Michael Schmitz (starting C for the Giants). 

Legette could become the next Deebo Samuel and make Panthers fans forget about the players they passed on to draft him. But history is not on the Panthers side, who continue to demonstrate the definition of insanity of doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. 

And I still have no idea what kind of team they are trying to build.

We are rebuilding and not trying to win it all this year.  Young now have plenty of tools to succeed and if he fails, we will likely draft new QB next year.  I think we are on two year plan.  Next year we will be a more complete team with or without Young.

Seems pretty clear what they are trying to build to me, a power running game that supports a quick passing game. We signed two huge guards, Canales is known for emphasizing quick throw time, we traded for Dionte Johnson, drafted the best RB in the draft, first pick was a bigger Deebo Samuel and we drafted a receiving TE

Power run, play action, quick throws, try to limit third and long.

Mingo is a big slot and XL is a X WR. Not really the same style player. Athletically they have similar measurements but they play the game pretty differently. I think XL and DJ complement each other well and should be our outside WRs. Mingo will rotate with AT in the slot and hopefully take over full time next year. 

OG to C doesn’t seem to be as crazy of a move as people think. We have Corbett, BC, and then Mays there. Not the best but the first 2 are solid OGs when healthy and pretty smart players. I would have liked to draft one but we couldn’t fix everything on one offseason. CB and Edge could have used some real depth, but I think we sign Gilly now to fix one of those temporarily. 
 

Oh a bright note, both XL and Sanders had some of the best catch ratings in 10 plus yards down the field.

Some more food for thought. Did Fitt ever come out of a draft with a high future pick like Dan just did with his 2nd in 25? That paired with drafted players like XL, Wallace, and Brooks (with his energy) might take a moment to peak but offer higher ceilings makes me think Dan knows this is a process that takes several years to address. There is no quick fix like Fitt tried with trading away picks to try to win now vs later. These things make it appear Dan has told Tepper they are going to do things the right way like he did in Buffalo and it will take a few years to see the returns fully. It worked out well for Dan and Beane in Buffalo.

Not finding a center in the draft who would be a backup at best is no big deal. There are several free agents out there still available plus all the guys who will get cut between now and the season start.  I am excited we finally have drafted a top 5 tight end and got the best running back in the draft. Much bigger news and potential starters versus a rookie depth center.

I do miss the days of the constant Ryan Kalil.  What a joy that way.

Would it be nice to draft a 10 year center?  A point of contention for drafting an early center is that the average draft position was between 2 and 5.  I don't recall where I saw or heard it, but it seemed to come up a lot.  So take that with a mountain of salt.

That being said, as fans we do not have all the information.  Dan and Dave have all the information.  They did the interviews, have looked at all the tape, and have talked to their guys.  So they have a TON more information than we do.  

Also, it's not our job.  We are passionate about our team, but we're fans.  These guys have to make decisions that will affect their lives, their family's lives, and their reputations.  A fan messed up a mock draft, so what?  When a GM bungles a draft, that could be it for them.  So they are going to be doing the best they can at building a team because that leads them to more success, money and security.

I'll say this: let's be patient.  I know it's hard after years of sucking.  Watching other teams find success in a quick turnaround has been frustrating.  Having "your draft" crushes do well while our picks struggle sucks.  Then again, if drafting was easy then why didn't Mike Mayock last as a GM since he was a TV expert?

The reality is that when good prospects go to good teams, they look good.  When good prospects go to dumpster fires, then they look like poo.  There are VERY few players who can truly change the outlook of a team, like Cam did.  Most need help and support from strong organizations with good coaching.

Let's see what happens.  We have to be patient.

Although my Panthers enthusiasm is near an all time low, I actually think the draft (and FA) shows a pretty clear team direction related to power running and quick passing.  I would have liked a C too, and I don't love XL, but it's very clear that they really believe in him and our trades for once look good overall...

Dunno, if not for last year and who we still have at QB I think I'd be pretty pumped about this off-season.

      You have just been hired to be the GM.  You have a new owner and have been given full control of the roster. What is your plan, who do you keep, who to you trade?   For me. (Disclaimer I am not the expert some of you think that you are, and this is my opinion)  Coaches Dave Canales has a plan, and I will give him the time to implement it.  it's going to take a couple of years to see it through.  Defensive Coordinator Evero is in a tough spot.  He doesn't have the talent to run a competitive defense.  The focus will be getting him players so he can run his defense.  The O-line is our strength, which is very laughable since last year it was our weakness.  I'd try to keep all 5 together, You have some decent back-ups in Zavala and Christensen and a future center in Rahm. QB I would try to keep Dalton for another season and look for one in the draft.  Maybe look for a QB that needs a fresh start somewhere else as a backup and let Canales work his magic with him. Tight End Sanders is a rookie and playing like one but should develop into a good TE.  Tremble is adequate for now.  The remaining TEs I would clear out especially Thomas WR I would try to sign Jonnson to an extension by the trade deadline. If I cannot get a deal done than I look for a trade for him. I wouldn't take anything lower than a 2nd.  He's shown he can be a very valuable WR.  It would put stress on the WR room but I would learn quickly who is going to fight to be the next top target for our QB.    We have Theilen for one more season, XL has shown flashes and Coker when given the chance seems to be keeper.   MIngo and the other WRs are going to have to prove they are NFL WRs if we trade Johnson away.  RB.  I would release Sanders before the ink was dry on my contract.  He's a waste of a roster spot.  Hubbard would be my #1 back, Brooks would replace Sanders in the backup role for the remainder of 2024.  Get him a couple of carries per game so 2025 he has some experience.  Even fully healed I would not put him as the lead back.  Defensively we are a mess.   We signed players that may never see the field this season and so many of our good players are on IR.   Brown and Horn are about the only two veterans that are elite.  Defensive Line   I would keep all current players under contract.  This should be our No. 1 target if we aren't going to go for a QB in 2025.  In fact, I would take a DE only if he is a Hutchinson/Watt type DE LB I would let Shaq finish the year out and move on. Jewell is under contract for a couple of seasons and is serviceable.  Wallace is raw and IMO needs playing time to get better.  I think he was a good pick and will pay dividends as he matures. CB Horn is playing well and as of this writing he isn't injured.  He would be another player I would consider for a trade if we get GREAT compensation for, otherwise I would extend him.  Jackson IMO will be better if we can get some sort of a pass rush. Safety  Woods and Franklin are our best players but Franklin is on IR.   2024 Trade Deadline.  There are two players IMO that could give us draft capital to rebuild the Panthers.   Johnson and Horn.  Johnson will only net us a 2nd or a 3rd because most teams know he probably isn't going to stay and can just wait to sign him in 2025. Our only hope is that Johnson is the final piece for a playoff push for another team.   As GM I would make a trade if we get a 2nd or 3rd for him. Horn on the other hand would give a team this year and next to work out a deal and we could get some nice draft capital for him.   Minimum one 1st and one 2nd.   2025 offseason This really depends on what you plan to do with Young. I would start him the final 6 games and see if he has learned anything from being behind Dalton.  If he flounders in the final 6 games than I would trade him for whatever I could get.  I would try not to create anymore dead cap space for this team.  Those that are on the team and have one year left they would be Panthers in 2025. 2025 we might be more competitive but most likely not a playoff team.  Creating more dead cap space doesn't help.  My focus would be QB and DE as my top two priorities going into the draft.  My free agents would be limited fill only holes that require a glaring need of depth or a starter.  I would try to have as much cap space as I could for 2026.  2025 Draft  My draft is based on we were successful in trading Horn for a 1st and a 2nd and Johnson for a 2nd.   In round one I would take DE and QB.  Round 2 thru 4 would be defensive players unless someone on offense we rated high dropped.  5 thru 7 would be BPA OUTLOOK As GM I know it is going to take more than 2025 to fix all our issues.  But to put us in the right direction I don't go crazy on Free Agents trying to get us into the playoffs when most likely we aren't going to be there.    WHAT'S YOUR PLAN

      ok but why did tony dungy write a forward for this book. he was already retired by the time canales entered the NFL, its not like he was the colts ballboy in the 2000s or anything

      But what if OP is ugly as all fug and has trouble getting laid with anything over about a rating of a 5 without first having to pay the young lady? This would make it difficult to comprehend for some. Some guys have to accept that they get the leftovers of the last call of the night chicks who couldn't get taken home by anyone else. I refer to these guys as the cleanup crew.  They handle all the ones the other guys turn down and quiver in their stomachs imagining copulating with.
