Carolina Panthers great Steve Smith Sr. was a guest on Monday’s episode of The Clubhouse with Kyle Bailey. The team’s all-time leading receiver was asked about Jonathan Mingo and his hot start to this year’s training camp.

“I don’t need to watch film on Jonathan Mingo the way y’all watchin’ it,” Smith Sr. told host Kyle Bailey. “Me and Jonathan put some work in this offseason. So he was gettin’ some work in with me seven o’clock in the morning, outside at the end of the week after he was already workin’. We were doin’ a lot of work together.

“So this is not high on the guy. This is Steve Smith and Jonathan Mingo are adjoined to the hip. He calls me, I call him. When I see something or he has a question, there’s an open line of communications. This Batman and Robin talkin’, and tryin’ to figure out how can we corral Joker—which is the corners he’ll be goin’ against this year.”
 

While this reveal may have been somewhat surprising, Smith’s affinity for Mingo certainly isn’t. When Mingo was drafted by the Panthers last spring, owner David Tepper told the then 22-year-old that he was heavily endorsed by No. 89 . . .

Hopefully, the work pays off for Smith Sr. and Mingo—because sometimes, people deserve to have their faith rewarded.

1.  Uh....

Steve Smith didn't have the natural size/strength that Mingo has.  Smith earned his way through his attitude and training.  If he can channel any of Smith's work habits or pick his brain, it really can't be seen as a negative...

I'm not buying into Steve Smith is about to make something out of someone. 

89 has been around a LONG time.  He isn't the WR whisperer/mentor.  Put this under the been here and heard that before pile.

Not really the same. When he was playing he wasn't on the "let me help you" mindset. He was on the "Im the big dog, fug you" mindset. Which he needed to be. So honestly the results are TBD but looking damn good so far.

I don't think he has to be.  I'm also not saying Mingo will suddenly be a Pro Bowler.  Mingo was a rookie last year, out of position in a terrible offense.  Waking up early and working out with a HOF WR can't really hurt.  If he can pick up any pointers, work habits, or even that attitude I am all for it.

It's different now that he's not a player of course but yeah, imagine if this Smitty had taken Keary Colbert (as arguably the most promising example back in the day) under his wing.

Later in his career you had guys like Gettis and LaFell, but LaFell clearly didn't want to be that guy.

      We have seen Bryce get outplayed by all manner of QBs, from UDFAs to second round picks.  If we actually scouted any QBs it would not be a difficult task to upgrade from Bryce, you guys act like he is even decent. He is one of the worst starters league wide stop making excuses.

      if  ANYONE actually goes & looks at the FACTS on rookie Qb's after 2 full seasons as a starter in the NFL & they are still well below average do they rarely ever actually become top tier Qb's & instead most likely either do not recieve a second contract & or become life long backups...just saying

      So he became GM and decided not to address the weakness in the QB room following one of the worst rookie QB performances in NFL history?  There were options last season other than signing Dalton to a 2 year deal. Brissett and Jones by a wide margin, both of whom outplayed Bryce, Wilson, Winston, hell even Rivers off the couch was more exciting at the QB position. The time to address the failure in the QB room was last year but instead people on the Huddle cheered when we brought Dalton back then cheered when we were able to get anything for him after they finally realized he was washed up like a few of had been saying all along and got poo'd for even mentioning.  This year, the options were more limited obviously, especially since we lost Icky. It changed the dynamic of our draft. I think we were stuck this year keeping Bryce, but i still think giving him a 5th year option for what has amounted to replacement worthy performance was the wrong move. Why guarantee 25m if you're planning to replace him? You think he's going to want to be a bridge QB? Hell no. He's going to want out and we'll end up cutting him if he has another lackluster season because no one is trading for him with that price tag.  Were there better options as far as production available. A couple. Were there guys available with more physical tools than Bryce, Pickett or Grier, you damn well better believe there were. I've been saying all along, you always keep looking for your 1b. Bryce has yet to prove he can be a starter. Keep looking for someone who may. Put competition in camp. Let the best QB lead the team. Stop settling for less than mediocre.
