Has Wonnum even played a down yet? A healthy Wonnum type might be worth that money and a step up from what the Panthers have been putting on the field.

The Wonnum that was in Minnesota wouldnt even be a starter in over 70% of the league.

and he is only making 2.5 mil less than what Chubba will be making on this new extension

1) Still young at 25. Good contract for the production, especially at only 15 million guaranteed.

2) Investing in a core offensive identity. An elite running back corps is a force multiplier with our upgraded interior line.
3) Acknowledging performance and retaining developed talent sets an important precedent for a young, rebuilding team.

4) This “devaluation” of running backs perspective seems to be waning. Setting aside the Chiefs and their hall of fame coach/QB/TE combo, the tops teams have all invested in RBs, many of which were free agents.

Lions with a contract to Montgomery and first round Ghibbs. Ravens sign Henry. Eagles sign Barkley. Vikings sign Jones. Packers sign Jacobs. Commanders sign Ekeler. Texans sign Mixon. Bills have their second rounder Cook who filled in after 3rd rounder Moss was underwhelming (who the Bengals then signed this offseason but is hurt). The niners moved for CMC. Steelers Harris was a first rounder. Falcons have Bijan playing well.

I'm absolutely amazed at how many people actually think this was a great move. Like did y'all just become Panthers fans yesterday? When has re-signing a RB to a big money contract ever worked out for this franchise? DeAngelo Williams? Jonathan Stewart? Christian McCaffrey? All of those re-signings were mistakes. Giving a RB big money has a terrible track record of ROI, period. It's a draft 'em and let 'em walk position. A big part of the Panthers' roster management issues over the years and a big part of why we have historically been inconsistent before finding our consistency as perennial cellar dwellers under Tepper is because we have always fundamentally struggled to understand positional value. We have always tied up far too many premium resources be it cap space or draft picks in non-premium positions. We currently have a ton of money tied up in RBs and interior OL. This is the type of stuff that I thought Tepper's "analytics" and hedge fund experience would help fix yet the doom cycle just keeps repeating.

It must be the messenger because they poo'd the hell outta me.

People don't understand positional value. We just drafted a RB in the 2nd round which was very questionable. Why on earth after you get off the the Sanders contract would you go back and pay Chubba after you used a 2nd to draft another RB. It just makes no sense!

We investing in the RB position for 3 straight years. Just dumb to keep doing the same thing continuously. RB is the least valued position on offense. Their success depends on the Oline play. Speaking from experience I played RB. I wasn't elite obviously but I played at a competitive level in highschool. A RB is nothing without his Oline.

Don't pay those guys big money.

Hell yea Chuba!

Glad to see the team retaining talent instead of training players for other squads.

Solid deal too. Will be nice having a 1-2 punch with him and Brooks. In today's NFL (and with the possibility of an 18-game season in the near future) it's going to be even more important for teams to have two capable RBs on the roster.

We have a long history of way over spending on RBs, off the ball LBs, and interior OL and zero history of sustained success on the field. These two things are not unrelated.

The contract details aren't clear yet but to break it down:

  • Sanders is off the books when we release him after this season.  The cap savings are more than double the dead cap (which is minimal) so he's cut/not here in 2025, saving us cap room
  • Brooks is on a 2nd Round contract - ~$2 mil next year
  • There is no other RB on contract next year

That's a RB room worth $11.5 million overall.  Around the 17th-20th ranked in the league financially - and that's before teams make their offseason moves and new RB investments.  That's not a ton.

If you're arguing keeping Chuba in house instead of paying a vet 2-4 mil this offseason to pair with Brooks, I can see that argument.  You're saving around 6-7 mil in cap in that scenario.

But I don't see the argument that we have a RB room that's WAY overallocated in resources.  We will have a 2nd rounder and Chuba on the books, that's it.  It's really not a huge deal, not some major contract.

It's not a terrible deal in a vacuum.  But I think it further validates some concerns about the strategy of our front office.

    • LOL, I tried to do this also....But I never found enough to make a guess.
    • gosh no one cares about the OGs...   Id list hunt here too, if not for missing 95% of the season.   Best I can say, Tri Turner was the best OG in panthers history if you factor in career length. Wharton was super solid, but never elite. Norwell while having a 1st all-pro, only played 2.5 starting years.    If lewis stays on the panthers and keeps his play lvl at 2025, his path is right there and easy. In 2028 he could be the best OG in panthers history.    Dang if panthers or NFL don't have long great careers.....its sooo rare.
    • All true, Stafford and Mccvay were both talking about "retiring" during those future picks too, I member. In my computer when you make future trade, I feel you have to factor in the worst case or close to it from your side. The big issue for the panthers, maybe even now is that they have not proven they can draft well enough to trade. I know that Dan and company have not traded future picks and they seem to always want 7-8 picks overall. They like to trade 3 picks for 3 picks or 2 for 2.   It would have been great to flip BB for that haul and use those Rams picks instead of the first overall pick...... Verse wise, Jesus what a beast....... Garrett is the top dawg and all, but man this is rough for me. I also noticed this about the panthers they are pedo bears, they like dem young. So a 25 year old verse would have gotten gigged with the panthers. Even with NIL and 6th year, and even coofus fallback, panthers prefer younger players. Monroe Freeling (Round 1, Pick 19 | OT, Georgia): 21 years old Lee Hunter (Round 2, Pick 49 | DT, Texas Tech): 22 years old (estimated) Chris Brazzell II (Round 3, Pick 83 | WR, Tennessee): 22 years old Will Lee III (Round 4, Pick 129 | CB, Texas A&M): 21-22 years old (estimated) Sam Hecht (Round 5, Pick 144 | C, Kansas State): 21-22 years old (estimated) Zakee Wheatley (Round 5, Pick 151 | S, Penn State): 22 years old (estimated) Jackson Kuwatch (Round 7, Pick 227 | LB, Miami OH): 22-23 years old   Tetairoa McMillan, WR (Arizona) — Age: 22 Nic Scourton, EDGE (Texas A&M) — Age: 20 Princely Umanmielen, EDGE (Ole Miss) — Age: 21 Trevor Etienne, RB (Georgia) — Age: 20 Lathan Ransom, SAF (Ohio State) — Age: 23 Cam Jackson, DT (FL)- age 22 Mitchell Evans, TE (ND)- age 22 Horn-22   Fitterererere just turned out to be a awful hire, too green, too willing to please, no sense of what talent looks like on teams other than Seahawks, too much pressure, didnt have the correct network of coaches and FO office people. Kick was herniay leftd him with a bare bones talent to start with and besides taking a bottom level team and improving it, he made it even worse AND trading prime draft picks to prolong the timeline to fix. People forget Dan didn't have the 1st overall pick and 39th overall(that dude looking good for bears) to repair this team. Dan could have traded that 1st overall for a proven 1k WR, 9th overall, future 1st and future 2nd......
