Jerry Jones crazy or smart?

If you watch much ESPN and NFL network, you would think they spend 25% of coverage on one team--Dallas.  Even during the draft, Jerry takes the full time on the clock when nobody is on the phones.  He sets up his draft room like some dictator's banquet hall.  He does stuff to get his team on TV--in other words.  Now, Deion put Colorado on the map and he dominated the headlines in college football for a team in the top 20--barely.  He is not a great coach; he recruited through the portal and talked 25 players or so to transfer.

For Jerry, it is not about the game of football; it is about the show of football.  Yes, he'd like to win, but his ego gets in the way.

If he lucks out and this move is successful, he looks like a genius--if it fails, he blames his coach.  I think Jones would do this--

The problem with it isn't about it being successful or failing, it's what happens if they BOTH happen?

What does Jerry do if Shedeur is amazing but Deion is an awful coach, or if Deion is an amazing coach but Shedeur is shitting the bed and it's clear very fast that he needs to be replaced?

You're tied to them both and if you need to replace one, you are going to need to replace both as there's no way you can get rid of one while the other one stays.  If you cut/trade Shedeur, Deion is going to quit.  If you fire Deion, Shedeur is going to hold out and demand a trade.

And these days, how many coaches are able to stick around for 10+ years with one team like you hope the QB you draft will be there?

It's almost like the best case scenario for them is that they do well for a few years and when you have to fire Deion to bring in a real NFL HC, Shedeur is good enough to get you a good return in a trade.

I've been listening to a Michael Lewis podcast "Against the Rules" -- season 4 deals with the sports gambling industry.  Essentially Cowboy fans are known to place such stupid bets that the online betting sites use that to skew the odds even more in their favor.

I just googled it and yes, the Cowboys are still currently the most valuable team in the world, and by a decent amount, they're worth $10.1 Billion while #2 is the Warriors at $8.8 Billion.

Also seeing the list, how the fug are the Rams the 3rd most valuable sports team in the world?

I get why the Cowboys got there in the 90's, but I'm shocked they're still #1 on that list, they seem less relevant than ever.

The rams play in LA where 10 mil people live - it’s the largest market in the country.  It doesn’t hurt that they won a Super Bowl recently.

Theres nothing east about Dallas but Jones has wielded his power with the nfl  to make sure his team is in a division with rivals that have some of the largest market shares in the nfl and play in the best prime time spots.  They are always in the spotlight for better or worse.  He makes moves like this that are absurd football wise but media wise pay huge dividends.  Hes great at keeping the brand relevant.  He bought the team for 140 mil and now it’s worth over 10 bil.  I hate the cowboys and even more their fans but you gotta give the guy his due… Jerry Jones is a brilliant marketing strategist.

Then why is there a thread on a Panthers fan forum about them? lol

Not enough to make it worth it as they’d still need to move up again.

Cant see how they’d make it worth our while when they’re only 4 spots behind us already, they’d be better off just loading up an offer to move all the way up to where they need to get

I would be surprised if Sanders goes before 8. There's talk that he may not go in the 1st at all. Dallas can probably get him without moving up but Jerry doesn't need to know that.

Great points--the Cowboys are as close to reality TV as I have seen, and that seems fine with Jerry.  He wants to win, but I wonder if the distractions are just to keep people watching.

Teams aren't going to want to take Dak's awful contract.  They definitely aren't going to get any value back by trading him.  Not this offseason especially.   No way a team gives a first for the opportunity to take that giant contract for a qb that is a little above average.  I believe the Dallas offense statistically was better overall with Rush in at qb and they won more games.

On the open market it would fetch way more then that I would imagine just on brand alone.  Problem is there are only a handful of people in the world that could afford that

    • Please don't tell me you just averaged the QB ratings of all of Shough's starts to declare his QB rating as better 😂 I hope you don't actually believe that's how it works.  Otherwise please show your math on Shough's QB rating as a starter. Thanks for including Shough's 2.6 more Rushing YPG in this comparison, really doesn't feel at all like you're desperately grasping for as many straws as you can here. The truth is, it takes a statistical bottom-tier starting QB like Bryce Young to make Shough look simply OK by comparison.  And that bottom-tier starting QB still, by your own admission, puts up more points for his offense than Shough.  You're framing this as damning for Bryce, but in reality the fact that him and Bryce are so neck-and-neck is shining Shough in a very poor light. Yes Shough is a rookie and Young is a 3rd year starter, which is why I circle back to my position of Shough having a "pretty solid, encouraging rookie season" whereas you're fanboying over him.  Never mind that Shough is 2 years older than Bryce though.  Normally yes a QB's experience in the league is invaluable...but Bryce is kind of a unique situation considering the biggest complaint with him is he is too physically limited to succeed in the league.  Do we think a QB can overcome severe physical limitations simply with experience?  Also I remember wayyyy back (/s) when we cared so much about DJ Johnson being an older rookie and our standard for them being that they're more NFL-ready and able to contribute sooner rather than later.  But now all of a sudden Shough is just a poor little 26-year-old rookie on an awful team.  Seriously...the way you frame everything around Shough is straight out of a fanfic.  Constantly referencing with tears in your eyes how he's succeeding against all odds on such an awful team.  Meanwhile the Saints' D is 14th in PPG and their offense (led by Shough) is 29th in PPG.  Telling me how the Saints managed a win on Shough's shoulders against the Jets last week who put up...*checks notes*...6 points against the Saints' D.  Yes god bless the savior Shough who willed his team to victory against those juggernauts led by Brady Cook.  Never mind how Taysom Hill threw as many touchdowns in 1 passing attempt as Shough did in 49 passing attempts.  Yikes.
    • Who's gonna drop the gloves? I can't think of a single player on this team that can fight. Period. Much less get the best of an opposing player. Please.
    • as a starter, Shough is better this year in all the aspects I shared with you.  Facts. You disputed nothing I said because I’m talking starts and my numbers are right
