As of today, who would you draft at number 8?

Recommended Posts

Warren will not be among the beat players available to the Panthers at 8 so you need to forget about him. If Graham and Walker are gone you're looking at CB or S (although I'm skeptical of the Panthers choice here) and possibly an OT. Don't rule out a late 1st ranked edge here either.

What I would love to see...

Trade back to the early teens for an additional 3rd and draft the best remaining DL.

Of the guys we are looking at (Walker, Campbell, Stewart, Williams or Green) 1 or 2 of those will be available.

Easy.

1.  Edge Jalon Walker:  I have been skeptical of Walker's fit as I would be any hybrid type of player, but his strengths as a person and player and the flexibility he gives the DC is formidable. He gives us a LB who can covert to Edge or Edge who can convert to LB during "hurry up" offenses when you can't substitute.  Walker scares me, but you don't draft him if you can't see the fit.  At #8, we could do worse.  I am seeing more Micah Parsons than I did a week ago.

2.  CB Will Johnson: Too often we think of the third CB as depth or nickel because that is traditional thought.  In today's NFL, it is common to have 3 CBs on the field since the NFL has gone to 11 personnel --3 WRs, 1 TE--65% of the time, up from 55% in 2010; and if we have an injury to Horn or Jackson, there is not a lot we can do).  With Johnson and Horn on the outside and Jackson on the third WR, our secondary is solid, preventing us from having to cover the third WR with a S, who would be assigned to TEs instead.

3.  TE Tyler Warren:   The only way I take Warren is if I plan to use him as a multi-dimensional offensive weapon.   He would give the Panthers an elite TE (when we have been good, we have had an elite TE and an elite ILB) and lessen the need to reach for a WR by giving Young a shiny new weapon.  There are a lot of teams who like Warren, so if he is still on the board, watch a team like the Rams try to trade up.  With Sanders as an option in a 2 TE set and depth, we would have a pretty good TE room.

Chris Simms recently said Warren would be better than Brock Bowers.   Well....

In five years:  Warren finished his five-year college career with 1,839 yards, 153 receptions and 25 total touchdowns.

In three years:  Bowers in three years at Georgia finished with 2,538 yards, 175 receptions and 31 total touchdowns.

Jahdae Barron. Bringing plus physicality at a position where it’s normally scarce is an impactful swing. He’s going to help the character of whatever defense he’s on.

I’d prefer a d-lineman, but there likely isn’t one worth 8, and there are so many in the middle rounds. Just get a dude who helps.

I would take Tyler Warren. Trade down and take him if you have to. Easily the most sure bet you could take in the Top 10 and would really, really open the offense up. Defense is an issue, yes, but you don't whiff on a defensive player just to say you tried.

Take the sure bet at 8. Take Tyler Warren.

I think Jalon Walker is a major reach at 8. I actually like Jihaad Campbell better as a prospect. We need ballers all over the place though so I'm hoping for BPA. My draft crush is Tyler Warren though. He is a blue chip TE that can effect the game in many ways and cause problems for defenses. He and Sanders would be a hell of a young TE duo

Did you check the stats?  That’s why I like James Pearce Jr. better.  Pearce has been more productive than Walker from an Edge standpoint and he has better size. 7.5 sacks in 13 games and 10 sacks last year compared to Walker having roughly 10 sacks in 2 years.  Elite burst and power off the edge. In my opinion he will be better than Burns because he closes the deal when he gets to the quarterback.

Now if you are talking about intangibles? Hands down Walker is better. Everyone gloats about his leadership.

I don’t understand why Pearce gets such a bad rap unless I missed some of his off the field incidents.

More tackles for loss too. Pearce has better production for Edge. Has to be the intangibles for Walker and potential red flags for Pearce that has one flying up boards while Pearce is slotted to be drafted in the late 1st.

    • XL could easily be the last dog at the bowl for WR production next year.  That could leave him around 200-300 yards which would be disastrous.
    • Well sure, that's where the disconnect is then. If Thielen only gets 300-400 yards and T-Mac is healthy for the full season, then I'm with you guys, in that scenario there is absolutely zero excuse for him to not put up over 1,000 yards.   In fact, I'll let you double that, if Thielen has only 600 yards, then again, my expectations are for T-Mac to surpass the 1k mark with ease. But his game has never been about his physical abilities, so even if he loses a half a step, he's still the same player who is a savvy route runner who will get open and Bryce will continue to find him due to their chemistry.  Particularly since Bryce isn't a QB who forces things, he takes what the defense gives him.  So when teams focus on T-Mac and Thielen is more free to find those holes in the defense than he has the last two years, I don't think Bryce is going to ignore him. If someone wants to argue for T-Mac getting to 1,000 yards, personally, I'd say those yards would be far more likelier to come from XL and Coker than Thielen.  And that has nothing to do with XL or Coker, but that I'm still a firm believer in Thielen being able to still get 50-60 yards a game, again, particularly as he'll have less defensive attention on him than in either of his 2 seasons with us so far. Just because T-Mac is our #1 of the future who will have the ball forced to him at times, doesn't mean he needs to be forced into that role from day 1 when we have 3 very legitimate WR options next to him. Let the rookie grow into the role and the NFL game, we have that ability to do so because of Thielen, XL, and Coker.
    • Spot on. He's only 20 and his height 6'2 and weight 230lbs might make him more of an off-ball LB possibility. He's a multi-year project
