I'm going to guess that the Riot crew received Very Specific Inquiries about whether they could help arrange something like this in the past, indicating there's enough interest to make it happen officially. And maybe (maybe, maybe) they've already done some one-offs to prove it can work?

I think the business plan / concept is probably solid, but the market (Panthers) is probably wrong.
