in 2014 we won the division with a losing record.  Haven't checked but with the new rule we could have been left out

Yeah I was in ATL for that final game to win the division.  That was my question if winning the division gets you in and then they seed based off of record or if record will determine everything?

Don't see how it matters other than taking care of the precious at the top. If you're a better team, then you'll win at home or away. Really not that big a deal unless you're traveling across country. Then again, most playoff games are later in the day, so that doesn't matter either.

Feels a bit like a change that’s not based as much in fairness and good of the game and more to pacify owners in strong divisions.

This.

Weird stuff moves like this means there’s always money involved.

I dont buy the idea that it would create more competitive games

Given this:

Seed Current Format Record Proposed Open Seeding Record
1 Lions 15–2 Lions 15–2
2 Eagles 14–3 Eagles 14–3
3 Buccaneers 10–7 Vikings 14–3
4 Rams 10–7 Commanders 12–5
5 Vikings 14–3 Rams 10–7
6 Commanders 12–5 Buccaneers 10–7
7 Packers 11–6 Packers 11–6

That would mean Wild Card round would have been

Eagles (14/3) v  Pack(11/6)

Vikings(14/3) v Bucs(10/7)

Commanders(12/5) v Rams(10/7)

Instead of

Eagles (14/3) v  Pack(11/6)

Bucs(10/7) v Commanders(12/5)

Rams(10/7) v Vikings(14/3)

Then with the reseed it would mean that highest remaining seed would always draw the lowest remaining team.

It still means something. You're still in the playoffs. But having teams with losing records host playoff games is dumb and it's happened three times since 2010. We were one of them. Automatic bid? Sure. Automatic home playoff game? Ridiculous.

Lol so a hypothetical division with the Chiefs, Bills, Rams, and Eagles would produce a 9-8 division champ after they beat each other up and no home playoff game? That's ridiculous. That's why it's the way it is. You might as well get rid of two division games while were trying to water down the product so the NBA doesnt look so bad by comparison.

Please do not forget that everything the NFL does is for the increase in revenue. If a big market team draws more money [ticket sales, betting revenue, TV ratings & etc.] when they play at home versus on the road in the playoffs, you can safely be sure the NFL knows & will act accordingly. Just like the draft lottery proposal, if the NFL can capture TV ratings for it, they will.
