Yeah, I just think Penix had one of those nightmare games that had more to do with himself than our D.   Then the whole team around him sort of imploded too.

but we were due for one of those going our way for a change vs us being the one gifting games to an opponent.

100%. A chunk of our victories over the past few years have been opponents having "those games." Hey, take em where you can get them, especially in the division.

Definitely glad to see that ATL also suffers from poor coaching issues, as well.

While we have been a dumpster fire,  it has been nice to see most of the division also experience this fate, as well.

Penix was awful because the defense bottled up their run game and was finally getting pressure. It clearly rattled him, as it would most QBs.

they didnt have a sack all game did they?  Penix is bryce young level bad neither is going to pan out.  falcons should try cousins again and move on to a new qb next season.  panthers should also but they will most likely just pick up fifth on bryce

Eh.....I tend to disagree on the run defense but that's whatever.

The thing that struck me immediately was that they DID have ample opportunities to get yards on our pass defense but Penix was so frequently off target with the ball that it was nuts. Late, behind, too high, too short, etc. He was spraying throws everywhere but where they were intended to go.

I am a little reticent to give TOO much credit to our defense for that reason. They did generate a lot more pressure on the QB so that was great.

It's a one game sample so I don't want to reset the expectations just yet. Hopefully it's a trend and not a statistical outlier.

What surprised me was that they didn't seem to really commit to the run early and then couldn't once they got behind. I did notice the tackling seemed to be much better than we've seen, however.

idk how the three Mooney drops and two missed field goals can be chalked up to Penix being horrible, but he definitely fell apart later in the game when down two scores and having to be one dimensional on offense. There was a couple of passes too that were affected by the rush to force them off topic. Once Penix was uncomfortable, he unraveled further.

Then again, if folks are looking for a reason to not hope yet by finding reasons to dismiss the performance, carry on I suppose?

That was the game plan.  It worked.

I never planned to be the resident David Moore advocate but the guy went 32 for 351 and 3 TDs last year as the 5th option.  19 of the 32 went for 1st downs.  He's not restricted to blocking.  He's not elite.  He's a solid contributor as demonstrated above.

On the huddle, you’re either Jerry Rice or you’re worthless. He came into the season as the #4/5 receiver but Coker got injured and XL shat the bed. Could be a lot worse than David Moore.

Penix struggles under pressure.  This dates back to college.  He looked great against his Pac-12 defense and then when they made the playoffs against a good defense he looked erratic like he did last Sunday.  If you can force the Falcons to pass and get pressure on him you should have a good day.  Their strength will always been the running game with Bijan as long as he is there.

The David Moore hate confuses me too.  Depth vet who can play special teams and do the dirty work like blocking.  He is on a pretty reasonable contract as well.

Every qb struggles under pressure. That's why they pay pass rushers so much.

    • Should've been: Duren and Moose: 2 each (Duren for starting it, Moose for going crazy after lol) Bridges: 3 (1 for defending Moose, 2 for escalating further with Stew) Stewart: 10 (fug that dude, came off the bench, long history already, NBA should've sent a message with double digit games)   Oh well, I think we can weather the storm for 4 games. A win tonight would be huge as the next couple after are tough, vs Houston and Cleveland. Last game against the Wizards should be a win even short handed. Then back to full strength and keep the train rolling. Still thinking we get a 7 or 8 seed and win 1 of a potential 2 in the play-ins to make the real playoffs. 6 seed and skipping the play-in entirely is a tough ask. But I do think we are better than Magic, Heat, Hawks and can pass 2 of them before the end of the regular season.
    • Hmmm... Well, one of them consistently got dumb penalties that you never see any other receiver commit like offensive offsides on 4th down. One of them consistently would just run routes out of bounds for no reason. XL's only saving grace is that he has been a solid blocker at WR for us There is a reason XL often didn't get the ball thrown to him - he made some of the dumbest mistakes I have ever seen from a receiver... Even receivers that have zilcho talent (Mingo, Terrace Marshall, and all of our other WR draft busts) didn't make mistakes this dumb. It is bad enough when you aren't helping your team because you can't get open; it is much worse when you are so bad and dumb that you are actively hurting your team. I honestly don't think there is any fixing XL. The dude is just an idiot and lacks any kind of awareness and common sense on and off the football field
    • Game planning and being the eyes from the box during the game. 🤷‍♂️ it's all I got.
