we like to save him as a backup tackle.  if he got hurt as a guard, we have no one close to him as a tackle.  and he's not really that good as a tackle, it's just hard to have good OT depth

Yeah.  They are protecting the first down line, so your best bet is throw underneath and hope the WR/TE/RB breaks one and then take the FG.  Going for a first down by throwing into the defense like that just shows a lack of football IQ, frankly.  Not that I know everything, but I know that.
