Souring on Canales

I have no strong opinion either way. I mean, for those who are out, do you really expect Tepper to hire anyone better? So far, Canales has probably been his best coaching hire. Granted, that's an extremely low bar to clear but I'm just saying it's not like there's a line of great candidates beating down the door begging to work for Tepper.

Going 5-5 with the worst QB play in the league isn't terrible. Now with that said, I expect to start getting the hell beaten out of us now that the Saints have shown what I thought was obvious all along - sell out against the run and stack the box and absolutely force us to have to throw the ball and it basically makes the game unwinnable for a Bryce Young QB'd team.

Canales is neither a tactician nor a franchise fixer so I fail to see his utility.

He demonstrates 0 knowledge of the X and O game and making necessary adjustments. This ‘team’ wins when a couple players not named Bryce have player of the week type performances and the rest of the ‘team’ (collective) does just enough to not screw it all up.

He has made NOTHING better from when he got here. Don’t get me wrong, there are better players, but it has nothing to do with his ‘coaching’ up. These dudes are running off of the same talent they had when they got here.

He is coach speak and placations. This franchise needs an ass kicker. Had one, briefly, did real good too, and well, you know. Problem being is that successful certified ass kickers generally don’t take sh from anybody, so… yeah.

He is meh, functional meh. Could be worse but I'm not expecting much better. If he was handed a stacked team he would become the weakest link.

At least he is NFL meh. That's all the positivity I can scrape together for DC.

Yeah it’s a long way out of this septic tank, I just hope we keep improving

Bryce sucks for sure. But there is a clear disconnect between the coach and the QB. One of them is refusing to throw it deep. I refuse to believe Bryce can't throw it deep, when he has before, both in college and the NFL. Either Canales is telling him you can't, or Bryce has zero confidence and doesn't want to take the risk so he just doesn't... either way it doesn't matter because the disconnect is so noticeable there's no way Canales goes into next season with Bryce as the starter, he'd rather resign. You can just tell by his interviews and coach speak

You can’t believe him, especially at the podium. I can think of 4 lies right off the bat.

1. Bryce is starter moving forward/Bryce benched next day.

2. When Andy is healthy, he will return as starter/ didn’t happen.

3. He prefers to run the ball on 2nd short. Literally throws the ball on 2nd and short the whole next game.

4. Whatever in the hell cover up went on with Bryce’s ankle/Andys thumb.

Maybe they aren’t flat out lies, but he is very misleading and changes direction a lot. His face during the press conferences just looks so condescending and annoyed. I think he just spouts off whatever gets him through it without making the locker room hate him.

matt rhule to a tee

...oh wait

Just add functional QB play. I just don't think DC has much more than hovering around .500 at best. He takes a lot of the wind out of his own sails in games, doesn't adjust well and seems to be more concerned with promoting himself vs improving his skills.

Bryce has never been able to throw deep in the NFL.  He is bad at it.  Every season.  You can find a clip of Tom Brady rushing for 20 yards.  Doesn't mean he is good at it.

Bryce was always a small ball point G.  We cheered it when we drafted him.  He doesn't fit a Jake Delhomme fug it deep ball offense.  Which has always been the Canales tree and every QB he earned this job off of (Wilson, Geno and Baker).

You can fire him. You could justify it too. But odds are highly likely we won't find anyone any much if at all better or less of a yes man as his replacement. In fact that is going to be the entire coaching candidate pool.

I agree you can’t fire him right now if you’re Tepper but it’s clear to me that he’s not the long-term answer unless he starts changing how he is treating and coddling players

I couldn’t care less about the HC right now.

He’s done some good things and I think he knows Bryce is not the guy.

Lets figure that out and then see if DC is the right guy long term.

I am down for that too. Mainly because I place a super high value on continuity and want to exhaust every option before turning a staff over again. It stunts the young player development, makes guys not fit the new regime’s standard, all that stuff.
