'Bama QB Swap in Offseason?

Recommended Posts

We don't know 1) where we're going to end up picking in the draft, or 2) what QBs will even declare for the draft, let alone which ones will be worthy of considering in the 1st round. That being said, I feel like our best bet may be to pursue a veteran with some upside that could be at worst a productive stop-gap until we can draft our actual QB of the future and, at best, another Baker/Darnold/Daniel Jones late bloomer redemption story.

So... Mac Jones, anyone?

The 49ers have him under contract for 2026 and will almost certainly entertain offers for him after his performance this season. Also consider that while many here have soured on Bryce Young, there are almost certainly still executives in the league that would take a shot on developing him as a former 1st overall pick.

If there is one team - and one coach/scheme - that could get the most out of Bryce Young it's probably Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers. I wonder if they would be interested in a swap of former Alabama star QBs with 1st round pedigrees? You could argue which team might have to throw in some additional compensation, but it could be a good deal for both teams.

The Panthers would get a QB who would be an immediate upgrade with potential to be that next Baker/Darnold/Daniel Jones redemption story and the 49ers get a backup to Brock Purdy with a skillset that Kyle Shanahan might just be uniquely qualified to tap into it.

Any takers?

fitz came up with this idea in another thread. I think its in the many options, my worry is SF will want picks or at least pay enough of BYs contract to match Jones pay stub.

I simply cannot think of any NFL coach that studies BY and thinks " I need that guy on my team "... Or  the classic " I can fix him ".

I mean.... not to dog pile on poor little BY... the Panthers spent 200+ million on the best OL that's not juiced maxed. Young, capable, and talent at TE, RB, and WR. Its still not enough......maybe all-pros at 10 spots could "unlock" BY.....

What logic exists that could explain trading a guy that is performing very well in your offense for a guy that has been atrocious in the NFL for....twice the price?

Are you sending them draft picks too??

This is maybe the most illogical trade idea I have seen here this season, and that's saying a lot.

Its difficult. The best and about only way is Mac Jones himself tells the 49ers he wants a opportunity to start. (But then they could change lanes and dump purdy.....) Back to Jones, the 49ers would not be out of line in asking for money and/or picks to take BY off the Panthers hands. The last thing you want is a player on your team that doesn't want to be there, old Antonio Brown wrote the novel on how to get off a team.....

Jones would have to tell the 9ers he wants out and here's a list of teams that he wants to join.... then the Panthers would need to be on the list as well...... the 9ers could laugh at the request and say we will choose when and if you will be traded. They also want to protect themselves so no Rams, Seahawks etc.

I mean we all just want about dang near anyone besides BY, even street FAs would be welcomed to some. I was never a fan of Jones and thought it was Bills hail Mary to fix the pats.. I got about 100 other option before Jones is even a thought.

Yeah, the Niners would be better off trading him for a mid-round pick or just keeping him as a good backup. A straight player swap wouldn't make any sense for them.

Bryce would be a better fit for Shanahan's offense, but they would never trade a qb they know can run their system for one who might be able to run their system.  We would have to give us too much to even the scales, and I hope we don't do that.
