I posted this in another thread but it's relevant here

Stroud is not a bad guy. He had a great rookie season but he hasn't been the same since. And the last 2 weeks he has completely imploded and just looks beaten. The defense has carried that team.

Young had one of the worst rookie seasons in one of the worst environments in recent memory. Last year we also had a record breaking bad def. He has improved and in his lone playoff game he had one of the best games of the season.

Year 1 it was stroud no doubt over young

Year 2 it was still stroud miles ahead but young was getting better after the benching

Year 3 it might be a tie- after the playoffs Bryce might be in the lead.

I am not rooting against stroud, in fact I've been rooting for him. I want both to succeed. But stroud is seeing ghosts and as of right now if I had to choose between all the qbs chosen in that draft.... Bryce would be my #1 ( but definitely not by a landslide- he still has tons to prove and 2 years to do it)

Choice #1: Neither.

Choice #2: Bryce

Choice #3: CJ

I can tell you that three weeks ago I would have never had them in this order. But, I have never really seen a meltdown of that level over two games. Delhomme at the end, but that was one. This was so much worse. He didn't even belong on the field.

That's a massive concern.

The Texans have done so much to try and surround CJ. They signed Diggs last year. Dell gets hurt so they trade for Kirk this past year. They drafted Higgins (who many had as a 1st rounder) and Noel (many here wanted) and still had Hutchinson

The fact is CJ had a pretty easy his rookie season. Clean pockets. Guys running open deep. Slowik was in his bag. Then the wheels fell off. CJ didn’t respond well to Slowik’s hard coaching. Slowik gets canned.

I don’t think there’s been a massive regression I just think things are a lot less easy now and CJ is having to actually think a bit on his own. Which is where the problems begin. CJ has some Sam Darnold to him. He can make every throw with ease but when there’s pressure they tend to do dumb stuff. In 2023 there was a lot less pressure and thinking so CJ balled out much like Sam did in Minnesota or even in Seattle. They’re both very very dependant on coaching/situation

You don't trade away one of the top LTs in the league when you don't have a valid replacement and your QB thrives in a pocket.  They also traded away Kenyon Green OG to make cap space.  They were wanting to make their defense elite at the expense of their offense which worked but Nico getting hurt followed by Schultz during the game absolutely finished off what remined of their offense.  Those 2nd and 3rd round rookie WRs could be good, but they need some more time as most due picked in that range.  I'm sticking with ALL QBs need protection and weapons to be competitive in this league.  CJ for example wasn't playing that bad all year when he had his TE and WR1 healthy, his rookie year was and will be an outlier for the reasons you already mentioned.  This playoff game was also an outlier for the reasons I mentioned.

lets compare the 2 in different categories this year keeping in mind stroud was injured missed alot of games

yards per game

byoung 28th 188.2. cj 18th 217.2

qbr

byoung 27th 47.7. cj 12th 62.0

passer rating

byoung 30th 82.8 .  cj 17th 92.9

y/a

byoung 34th 6.2. cj 16th 7.2

td%

byiung 4.8. cj 4.5

basically everything every year cj has been better it was a snowy playoff game cj had none of his weopons top wrs out top te out.

byoung has been bad every single year even this year he was bad he had a few good games but he was still bad.  he played ok in the play off game not great but did play ok .  cj is still the better qb not even close

Peoples expectations for young QBs is just too high IMO.

CJ Stroud is better than Bryce.  But he's going to have days when he struggles, and going to New England and playing good ball in bad weather ain't easy.

His performance was disappointing but long-term wise I still think he's going to be a damn good QB.  It is just a hard position.  One of the hardest, if not the hardest, in all of sports.  Look at Mahomes' #s this past year, and we know how good he is.

Not saying to forgive Stroud for how he played.  But I remember stinkers that Peyton would put up in the postseason.  Stroud isn't Peyton, but the point still stands.  These games will happen to young QBs, especially in the postseason.  It isn't abnormal.

    • I'm really not stressing about upgrading from Bryce. I'm frustrated with our inability (or refusal) to recognize overall bad QB performance and failure to seriously address the issue. QB is the most impactful position on the field, and we're not only settling for what we've been given to this point, but we've rewarded it with a fully guaranteed 5th year extension for a player that's never played 2 NFL franchise QB quality games back to back in 3 seasons. I can't understand how that's ok from a coach's or GM's viewpoint. Successful franchises don't do things like this. It just doesn't make sense.  We do not have a top half of the league QB right now. Since we don't have that player, we should be looking for him. Pickett isn't it. Grier isn't it. Bryce hasn't proven he is yet. Until you have that sure fire franchise QB, you keep looking. You're not consistently making the playoffs, a deep run, or a SB appearance without one.  What's the worst that could happen? We end up with 2 potential number 1 QBs? How horrible.
    • Easy to understand Pickett, if this is anywhere close to on point. Canales wants to get as close to Bryce as he can- get the pace and timing in the throws as close a he can to Bryce. So the other players don’t have to adjust so much, to a new guy.       If Cam was the 1, he would look for a rocket arm.  But Bryce is the 1. Look for limited in the same way.  Low velocity, plenty of air under it, feels just like home when Picket comes in. And you have the guys on the second team not having such a radical adjustment (if they have to play) like with Dalton to Bryce.    Enter Grier. I guess we will collect those types.
    • Best part is if we draft him, we can also use him as our fourth and one QB sneaker
