Panthers signing WR John Metchie

Meh

Agreed. Not sure how a guy who’s been on 3+ teams during his rookie deal somehow makes us loaded at WR.

Let’s just say that both of XL’s years with us are way better than any season Metchie has ever had. He’s not even a JAG based on his career so far. He’s a complete bust so far. Even Mingo and Marshall have 1 year in their career that’s better than all of Metchie’s years.

If he keeps falling into the trap of tunnel vision then we need a new QB. Build the best roster you can and if the QB isn't properly utilizing it then stop this mess of protecting Bryce from his faults and from competition and being in real NFL QB talent.

Exactly my point

And signing a WR that might be a camp fodder level of talent, but has a history of being a safety valve for Bryce, isn't going to help him out this year, it only has the potential for him to fall into old traps again.

Would have been thrilled with this move 2 years ago.  But 2 more seasons of Metchie not showing much, and just not a fan of it at this point with such a critical season upcoming for Bryce and the franchise.

In all fairness, none of them had to battle back from leukemia also. Guy missed his rookie year because of it then has had to hop from team to team.

But yeah, I'll be surprised if he is anything higher than #4 receiver

Beyond the locks, that's so gross, there is no reason Tremayne should be our 3rd (as I'm over XL and he shouldn't be higher than #4 on our depth chart this year), just no.

It's why I was really hoping we'd just get rid of XL for whatever the best draft pick we can get for him is.  Then sign a true quick twitch guy to be our slot WR, and even then, still hope that Horn Jr might take that spot from them in camp anyways and turn that FA signing into our #4, with Moore as a special teamer who gets a jersey and then Tremayne as that last project.

We can always draft a WR. I think we are probably giving XL one more training camp and if he doesn't have it together by the trade deadline, he is gone

I feel no need to protect Bryce from his faults.

I think this certainly had a huge impact on his production this far. If for no other reason, I’m 100% rooting for him to make the team

Lets wait until we see the contract numbers before we start stressing over a guy who will be fighting for a roster spot. I assume it is probably little under 2 mil. Not sure what else out there we could grab if want to spend on a TE aswell maybe Tutu Atwell or Dyanmi Brown? Literally best guys left we could maybe afford is Darnell Mooney or Hollywood Brown.

This isn't a nothing signing. Honestly think Metchie is at least the 3rd best WR on the team. He's been put in some difficult situations with deep WR rooms in Houston and Philly. And the QB room in NY was not good last year. He'll be the biggest separator on the team. Reliable hands. NFL speed. And... history with the QB. He'll make the team and hopefully unlock some trust in BY to throw deep more often. Think he can return kicks too.

You guys are overthinking this. John Metchie is just a depth piece, He here to create competition for XL, Jimmy Horn Jr., and David Moore. The team isn't going to hold off on making other receiver moves just because Metchie is on the roster.

Yeah he probably competes with Jimmy for that last WR spot.

They'll see what he can bring in the slot, he lost 2 years of his "career" so far to an ACL and leukemia.  Low risk, high reward with a WR who has played with BY and could be a poor man's AT who could improve or feel more comfortable in our offense.  Not hating this.

What?!?!

Say you think he can turn into something at some point, but this is a whole lot of praise for someone with less than 700 yards across 3 seasons of his career.

If he was remotely close to being the 3rd best WR on our team right now, the Jets wouldn't have let him walk without tendering him the RFA offer.
