For those of you who get mad when Thursday's pick is Perriman...or whoever ***grin***

Here is an article by Panthers.com's Joe Menzer that should give you a reason to keep your trap shut about a pick, at least until you start seeing some results.  The Panthers have a history of "hitting on the ones", and Dave Gettleman has continued that history with some great picks.

Gettleman and company certainly do their homework, and thus far he has not only made great first round selections, but second round selections as well, and even the third (last year), fourth and the fifth.  This being the case, you have no reason to go crazy because he picked a guy that you deem is not worth it, because you are not privy to the information that he is privy to, nor are you as an accurate predictor of a first round pick's ability to succeed (or lack thereof) as Dave Gettleman.  You're not even as good as  Hurn Dawg, if you admit the truth, so no need to act like an ass or have your mouth turned down on Thursday. The Panthers have essentially given you every reason to believe in their first round picks for the lion's share of the team's existence, including the current (arguably) 14 year streak.  You might be able to argue with the picks due to what you believe priorities are, but you certainly can't argue with the fact that any of them have been outright misses.  We've gotten some good football players for the most part, really the only problem being injury (which bites every team in the ass here and there).

Lastly, here is another tidbit of Gettleman's draft philosophy. It may not help you much because, like I said, you don't have the access that he has, but it could possibly lead you in the right direction.  Of course a guy has to have the skill/upside to have a first round grade (or any round grade), but then he has to have that hate-to-lose mentality.

As always, good stuff, Dawg.  I have actually stated that I am just going to sit back and wait. I usually have some pretty strong preferences by now, but since he has filled so many gaps, I get if he goes CB, OT, LB, RB, or WR.   I can say, however, that I am leaning toward Perriman being the pick.  People have said that we won't pick the same position #1 2 years in a row, but we totally gutted the WR position last year.

I remember Gettlemen's first press conference after being hired. It was like a guy from the mail room was getting his shot at management.  I didn't like it.  I am wrong more often than not, I am afraid, when it comes to first impressions, so I am going about this like a kid on Christmas eve--not knowing what to expect.

I think it's always kind of silly when fans think they know more and better than a GM.  It's super easy to say something after the fact, but as we all have seen, the draft is a complete crap shoot.  Gettleman and his guys do their research, and there are a ton of draft sites and commentators who do a TON of research as well.  The fact is, very rarely do we know how well a guy is going to play until he get's in a game.

Recently, someone has been posting the comparisons and write ups leading to the 2011 draft between Cam and Gabbert.  Most folks were on the Gabbert side of things, there was a lot of negativity surrounding Cam, yet he was first over all.  He has been a franchise QB in many respects.  I think we got a keeper there.

It just goes to show that getting all worked up on draft picks either way is silly.  Sure, we're all going to get excited or frustrated, but at the end of the day the GMs have done their homework.  Sometimes it pays off, other times it gets them fired.  We've got to give Gettleman the benefit of the doubt based on his short term success in finding good players.

So, you're preemptively griping about people who may gripe?

That's what I'm hearing.  I mean I understand the OP's point,  but everyone should know that regardless of who we end up picking in the 1st; there will be the ones who hate it, the ones who love it, and the ones who are on the fence about it.......just sit back and enjoy the ride I say.  Wait until Jan/Feb '16 before praising or bashing any picks from this draft.  Thursday can't come soon enough.....this lull of constant mocks must end!

14 year streak yeah right I mean I know we're good but come on no one has a streak like that:

'14  Kelvin Benjamin

'13  Star Lotulelei

'12  Luke Kuechly

'11  Cam Newton

'10  None

'09  None

'08  Jeff Otah

'08  Jonathan Stewart

'07  Jon Beason

'06  DeAngelo Williams

'05  Thomas Davis

'04  Chris Gamble

'03  Jordan Gross

'02  Julius Peppers

'01  Dan Morgan

That is pretty damn impressive.  I absolutely stand corrected.  It almost seems impossible that we weren't better than we were.

Well, when you take into consideration that we ONLY did well on the first rounders, it shows why we had such piss poor depth and overall team talent. Cam is the only remaining player from the '11 draft, which is horrible. Before that it was Hardy from the '10 draft and that's it...

Hurney always said he wanted to build through the draft so It's such a shame he was so god awful at drafting anyone without a first round talent the last 5 or 6 years he was around. Add to that the contracts he gave out to players from a 2-14 team and you have a recipe for continued failure. That's why I loved when Gettleman came in and cleaned house. Kept the good players around, got rid of the fat and signed his own guys. Did it with no remorse because it had to be done.

In Getts I trust.

Notice he hasn't had the balls to actually make a first round prediction. That way he can criticize everyone else.

:)

That goes against every thing I stand for. As a rule, I have been pretty consistent and forthcoming with what I believe about Gettleman and his drafting prowess at the top of the draft. I have also said that I am infinitely more likely to get pissed near the bottom of the draft due to being able to survey the whole field, and thinking that we could have used those late picks to fill a perceived need with players with upside at needy positions.

You can't pull up one single post where I have ever criticized one single first round pick that Hurney or Gettleman made. Second. Third. Fourth, Fifth. I am more likely to let any pick sink in (regardless), and then optimistically justify it.

In general, I absolutely believe that draft picks (and players in general) should get the benefit of doubt until they prove otherwise.

I don't make picks because it's largely a useless practice on the fan's part, unless you put it in its proper context: meaningless fun and/or a way to kill time before the real draft.

I never leave my balls at home.

That's what I'm hearing. LOL

Griping? People are generally going to do what they're going to do. At the end of the day, I will peruse the implosion with amusement. I am just offering smart people real (historical) evidence as to why they shouldn't be all upset with the pick.

Almost every post talking about Perriman mentions how people apparently don't want Perriman which I do not see.  At the same time, I don't really want him.  I don't trust guys that make a bigger name for themselves in the offseason drills.

    • okay I found this and it sounds like my hopes for the first surgery being not such a great job seems like it could be actual reality.  I only hoped because that would give a better chance for recovery and ia a possible scenario so I just thought it could be possible. Had no real evidence of it. But I’ll be damned.    This is a detailed report of Brooks’ surgery and the condition of his knee after the failed repair.     https://x.com/jmthrivept/status/2055743129408704806?s= Sparked by some very good questions by @CoachspeakIndex, here’s some info on Jonathon Brooks: 1. Speculation that the first graft/ACLR by Dr. Cooper didn’t “take” or at least was too lax, leading to failure and re-tear. Brooks dealt with issues cutting, progressing in his rehab into the early stages of 2024 and then re-tore it late 2024, requiring a second ACLR in January 2025 (essentially revision). Notably, CAR prolonged Brooks’ rehab process through Sept-Oct due to issues progressing into the next stages of rehab. 2. Second surgery performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache, who has extensive experience with revisions. He did a double bundle technique, harvesting graft from Brooks’ left patellar tendon and a strip of his right IT Band (his right patellar tendon had been utilized for the prior graft in 2023. The double bundle technique significantly increases rotational stability of the knee, leading to a stronger and more secure graft/reconstruction. Also to note, Brooks’ surgery wasn’t significantly delayed, meaning that the tunnels from his prior ACLR were in good shape and they didn’t need to perform bone grafts to fill in (would have delayed 2nd surgery by 5-6 months). Essentially, reading the tea leaves tells me that everything else except for the graft itself was still in good quality within his knee. Good sign for future.  3. Typically, you see a performance increase anywhere from 16-20 months post-revision. Brooks will be ~21 months out from his second surgery by the time Week 1 hits. His knee should be more stable and stronger this time around, with adequate time for healing and return to all movement patterns. I’m not viewing this situation as a typical “Player __ had TWO ACL tears, he’s cooked” situation. Rather, I’m viewing it as the first procedure failed, but the second procedure is significantly stronger and should allow him to return to form this time around. I don’t know why it posted as a link but there it is.
    • Jackie, any more reps tomorrow, or is that it for this session?  thanks for the work
    • How can you say they aren’t trying to win now with all the moves made in free agency? Or is trading first round picks the only way to be win now? I’d be fine never trading another first round pick again, win now be damned.
